583.0. "LINUX on PWS200i can't see PCI devices" by LEMAN::GABLER () Mon Mar 10 1997 09:27

	Hi,

I gave up trying to install LINUX on SCSI disk in my pws200i (note #578)

So i added an IDE disk and the installation succedded without any
problem on it.

The only remaining problem is that i can't see any PCI device. Here are
the messages i got in syslog :

...kernel: pcibios_init : BIOS32 Service Directory structure at
0x000fd5d0

" " : entry in high memory, unable to access

       " " : no BIOS32 detected

What does it mean ? how can i get this to work ?

	Thanks for help

583.1What version of the kernel are you using?NEWVAX::PAVLICEKLinux: the Truly Open O/SMon Mar 10 1997 14:381

Well, I've located the source module on my Redhat 3.0.3/kernel 1.2.13
    system (/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/kernel/bios32.c).

As far as I can see, it is saying that the PCI table entries are
located in the wrong memory area for the driver to access them. This
may go back to the issue of shadowing that you raised earlier. Could
one of the CMOS parameters be making a high-memory shadow of the PCI
BIOS table? I'd go into your system CMOS setup and turn off any
shadowing or caching that's enabled (AFTER writing down the current
settings, of course! 8^) and see if the problem goes away.

Maybe someone with a more substantial PCI background will have some
    insights here.

583.3Linux cannot recognize high memory PCI entriesLEMAN::GABLERMon Mar 24 1997 09:2228
	Hi,

I've got some more infos about that problem coming from Daves Heath (New
Mexico State University). Can someone check if our problem is really
related to this and if such a utility is available for our PWS200i.

Thanks
	Clark

Hello,

I am familiar with your problem but only with IBM type PCs.
LINUX and Novell Netware cannot recognize high memory PCI entries so a third
party utility must be used. I have found a DOS device driver called
MOVEPCI.SYS provided by Compaq that is the fix for just this. It works.
It moves the PCI entry to lower memory where it is properly detected
by LINUX. The only drawback is that LILO cannot be used because the dos
driver has to be loaded first....ie have to use LOADLIN.

For your DEC 6200 a similar utility might exist. I am totally unfamiliar
with DEC Personal Workstations though... Most all "moving-the-PCI"
stuff was designed for Novell Netware Servers. LINUX is not really what
they had in mind. Anyway, look into installing Netware on a DEC6200
and the solution to the PCI entry is probably documented.

Hope this helps,

    Clark,

were you eventually able to install linux on DPWS-i ?

Does anyone else have a working-procedure on how to successfully install
     linux on DPWS ?
