2534.0. "Audi A3" by WOTVAX::HILTON (http://blyth.lzo.dec.com) Wed Jul 24 1996 09:45

    Top Gear just raved about the Audi A3, looks like it'll be a cracking
    fun car!

    They said of the A3.

    'well proportioned, unmistakably Audi, and very attractive indeed. Very
    similiar occupant space to the A4.'

    3 engines, 101bhp 1.6, 125bhp 1.8 and 150bhp turbo 1.8. Also said they
    felt they were behind the whell of a classy executive saloon. Solid
    build coupled with big car luxury and spaciousness.

    Ride is superb, exceptionall rigid body and chassis. 150bhp gives
    claimed 0-62 in 8.1 secs. Impressively quiet and smooth running.

    Then they sum up: 'I'll waged the A3 is voted Car of the Year 97. It
    really is that good'

    Which set of wheels does the A3 drive ?

    Has this car been reviewed in any other mags apart from Top Gear? What
    are the German mags saying?

    It looks like this will be worth looking into for the next company car,
    as the A4's a bit expensive!

    The A3 is based on the next generation Golf (1997) floor pan, as is the
    new Seat Ibiza. The new Passat is heavily based on the A4. Audi/VWs new
    styling direction is towards big wheels and a vaulted roof, this
    includes the new beetle.

    Excellent, this should SHIFT! I think it's the same engine as the A4
    1.8T, which is 123bhp.

    Strange, I just rang Audi BrochureLine who have no info on the A3!

    re .last

    I think the normally aspirated 1.8 is 123bhp - the 1.8T is about
    150bhp.

    Richard. (looks good)

I've seen very positive reviews of the A3 in What Car, Autocar and the DT.
It's already being tipped as the next car of the year. I'm going to have a
good look at one when it comes out.

2534.8150bhp for sureWOTVAX::BARRETTRFri Aug 16 1996 17:369
    The 1.8T is a 4 cylinder 20 valve ( 5 valves per cylinder ) with a low
    pressure turbo producing 150 bhp. It makes the A4 damn quick ( 8.1 0-60
    and 137mph) so god knows what its going to do in the A3. I hope they do
    it as suitably as they have done with the A4 - the only external
    difference I can find between a 1.8 and a 1.8T is the T on the back.
