2528.0. "BMW - General Questions" by COLA1::CADAMSON ([email protected]) Thu Jul 04 1996 13:26

(I did look for a suitable place to ask this but couldn't find it!)

Can anyone please enlighten me as to what 'loaded' menas when refering to a
BMW, generally a 7 series?

Also, what do people thing about high mileage vehicles when bought from a
dealer.

I bought a 1990 5 series with 77,000 miles on it and the exhause started
blowing after about another 10,000 miles. Since the cost of a new one was
over 2k, I elected to have it repaired and repaired and repaiured. It leads
me to believe that even though I bought the car from a BMW dealer I should
have had it inspected by an independent party, i.e. AA or RAC. I take comfort
from the knowledge that any such report would have said something like ...'
New Exaust will be needed in 10-20K'

I think there would be no chance for a supplying garage to supply me with
such information.

I know all of these garages have to work to within certain figures but I
wouldn't expect a BMW to put a car out that they know will need a new exhaust
soon.

I have been reading about such places like Cowies Autopoint that sell on
generally high (100K+ ) cars but they usually have a complete and full
service history.

Does anyone have any experience of such places, or any comments, generally,
on the above?

Thanks,

Craig

    Craig,

    Loaded generally means it has all the extras - power steering, electric
    this and that, heated gearstick etc etc (all the goodies)

    RE: High mileage worries - has it got warranty? If you are not sure
    about *anything* either get an independent evaluation or walk away.

    When applied to BMW's I think 'loaded' means it comes with all those
    'luxury items' that you get as standard on any other car - a light in
    the glove box, vanity mirror on the sun visor, etc

2528.3 Not sure about warrantyCOLA1::CADAMSON[email protected]Thu Jul 04 1996 13:5618
I am not sure about the warranty. I *think* Autopoint offer it but am not
sure.

I wouldn't expect the warranty to cover such things as an exhaust though as
these are deemed to be wear and tear. Or not?

I would much rather know when buying the car that I am going to have to fork
out x number of quids in months to come for such things rather than find out
on my own which would then tarnish my opinion of such a car and/or dealer.

(I always thought 'Loaded' meant you've got to be loaded to buy it :-)

Anyone out there running a very high ,ileage BMW or Mercedes care to comment?

Thanks

Craig

2528.4You think 77,000 is high?!!CHEFS::MUSSONJjamieFri Jul 05 1996 13:5414
    Hi,

    I was talking to a guy the other day who said that he had been at an
    auction in Guildford. While he was there, an 89F (I think it was an
    89F, but I'm not sure) 525i went through with, wait for it, 375,000
    miles on it!!! The car went for a staggering 7 grand. Dealers' guides
    don't even get close to mileage adjustments like that.

    We all know what dealers can do to a digital odometer with a
    laptop...

I recall a story about a Volvo athat had (I think) 620,000 miles on it and
was still going strong. A VW Passat in last weeks auto car had done 520,000
miles (or there abouts) - it had had various major bits replaced but was
still on its original engine (phew!)

Eh? You seriously expect me to believe that BMW dealers would do such a
underhanded thing like that ? OK, I believe it :-))
