2483.0. "Ford Galaxy" by CHEFS::JEPSON_A (EntropyBuster) Mon Jan 08 1996 17:03

A quick question on the Ford Galaxy.

I'm thinking of getting one of these and need some info on
real miles per gallon (km/lit, rods/quart or whatever is
         Euro-PC right now).

         Published figures show 2.0i Petrol @ 32.8 on a 75mph cruise
and 23.5 when being urban. (Diesel equivalents are 40.3 and
         36.7 respectively.)

Has anyone got one and can advise on actual run-around mpg?

I'm assuming around 27 for the 2.0i (diesel ~39), but would
         grateful for any input.

Andy, although I have no personal experience of driving the Galaxy, I
think you are very optimistic with those figures. I would expect no
more than low to mid twenties for the petrol and low to mid thirties
for a diesel. These MPV/people_carriers are not known for their good
    fuel economy.

    Andy,

I've done 45,000 in my deisel Espace and keep figures for fuel
    consumption.

I have averaged 37.5 MPG from new. Typical driving is 85-90 cruising.

Worst case has been a day long thrash on the continent at an indicated
    100. Consumption dropped to about 32.

I would expect high 30s from a deisel Ford.

Do the VW Sharan figures differ at all from the Galaxy?

    Aren't they the same vehicle?

I agree with the last. The Pug 806 TD I borrowed turned in an average
of 38 in mixed driving. A short test I agree, but I expect mine (when
delivered in March) to be no more than 10% more thirsty than my 405 TD
estate. My advice would be to buy a diesel, the petrol will be thirsty.

Contact Ford Test Drive 24 on 0345 24 24 20 and join TALKBACK with is free
to company car drivers , they will arrange for a GALAXY test for 24hrs ,
there are certain cars that are not available which are all Cosworths ,
Soft Tops , Mavericks .

All you have to do is put in the petrol/diesel there are no mileage limitations
and the car is provided under their insurance.

				Hope this helps

This is a good point. It now states in VTX that unless the car is on
the PCL, vehicles must be covered by the dealers insurance.

2483.8Galaxy/Sharan StuffCHEFS::WHITWOOD_NNigel WhitwoodTue Jan 16 1996 12:4118
The Sharan and Galaxy are the same vehicle (with the exception of
    trim).

On the scheme, the Sharan is a better deal than the Ford. The cl and
gl are cheaper than the equivilent Aspen and gl. The VW GL has more
toys than the Ford and although the lease is cheaper it's taxable value
is greater - result is that they cost the same net (but the VW has
electric windows all round incl rear quarter, fog lights, computer etc,
    etc).

Back to the basic question, the Euro MPG (?) for a 2.0l Galaxy/Sharan is
31mpg. It's 25mpg for the Espace. These figures came from Top Gear
magazine. Dunno what these figures mean or how independent they are
but I assume they are some sort of average - does anybody out there
    know ?

2483.12A diesel for Xmas - if yer lucky??CHEFS::ast060.edo.dec.com::geddesiIain Graham GeddesTue Jun 04 1996 13:3716
I am also looking at the Galaxy/Sharan, and have had a diesel Sharan on order
since last November. Latest delivery date is August!!

If you are looking at getting the car soon then I would say forget the
diesel.

Also, on asking about the delivery of any Sharan, VW were talking months with
no definite commitment. They didn't even have a demo machine (my neighbour
has it as his company Sharan is on long order!).

I went to Forda and they had 7 sitting in their yard and could deliver to my
spec tomorrow!

Stick with the Galaxy (although the Sharan is nicer kitted out),

I'm surprised at this. My brother-in-law has had a Galaxy on
order since last October, latest delivery date is August.

When I ordered my Galaxy diesel in Dec I was quoted one month delivery, eventually
arrived in March, reason given was that demand for diesel version in U.K. was
underestimated!

Couple of comments after 4000 miles. Consumption seems to have settled at 38mpg
driving 75% motorway, 25% country roads. The inside is capacious to put it mildly
with a totally flat floor space it's more like a van (took 2 bikes inside+two passenger
seats with no problem). Drives well, no problems with its size although it seems
to be about the same length as a merc saloon. Kids love it especially the individually
controlled rear heating system!
