2470.0. "HYUNDAI Lantra" by 29358::WEBB () Wed Nov 15 1995 15:40

I have just returned from my trip to England and Wales and I enjoyed it very
much (especially the beer). I was able to establish what England's motoring
'claim to fame' is:
"You can get between trafic jams, there, faster than in any
	  other country in the world"

Avis decided to rent me a brand new Hyundia Lantra and I decided to let people
know what I thought of it, in case someone was thinking of buying one. I would
not buy one because I don't buy cars made by companies whose name ends in a
vowel, except an 'E' (I would buy a Rolls Royce or an Oldsmobile).

Anyway the Hyundai Lantra:

Good points: Very roomy, lots of room inside and in the boot.
             Pretty good acceleration
             Pretty good petrol consumption

Bad points: Lots of road noise
            Poor turning circle
Not designed for a wet climate - when you open the boot any water on
the lid runs/drips off into the boot (really pi$$ed me off). Also driving with
the side widows open a little the rain drips off the top of the door on to your
sleeve.

RE: -1

We were visting from Manitou Springs, Colorado.

Purpose of vist:
1. to drink some good beer
2. to walk on the beach and see the sea (we live more than 1000 miles from the
nearest coastline, of course it would
have been closer to go there but we
would not have been able to do 1.
                                         above)
3. vist relatives in Wales (we didn't find any traffic jams in Wales, it appears
that the road work crews concentrate on England
                            for the winter months)

    Wow, you wouldn't buy a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, a Honda, a Toyota,
a Mazda, a Subaru, a Dodge (division of Chrysler and maker of the
Viper), an Audi, a Volvo, or even a Lada??????

But he could buy the Viper since Dodge ends in 'e'... However, he'd miss out on
all those exciting Desoto's.

Neither would he buy a Volvo - Jeremy Clarkson's (we are not worthy) favourite
car.

Back to the Hyundai Lantra (original topic) for a moment. The stereo was
somewhat unusual in that it had no illumination on it at all, When driving at
night with it turned on (or off) you could not see it. Another feature was that
the volume controls (two buttons for up and down) appeared to have braille bumps
(as for blind people) on them.
Is this a new trend in stereos?

As for the 'good beer' I don't think its a good idea to go down that rathole.
Everybody has their own tastes.

As for the car companies it just personal preference,
I've owned lots of cars and driven hundreds of rental cars. I currently own 7
vehicles and I enjoy maintaining and restoring cars.
I seem to remember the Volvo drivers topic in this comference brought out some
opinions.

No chance of the stereo being for BLIND drivers ( They only drive
    Volvo's )

Re: Road works - Is it time to use up a repair budget or something at
the moment - Frimley/Camberley/Farnborough is absolutely littered with
    them.

Add Sandhurst to that list as well. Camberley is a no-go area if you
    approach from Sandhurst.

    Hyundai Lantra

Get this, I had one on the lease scheme until last march.

Good car for the money, electric eveything and air conditioning with an
auto box and power steering. I took it over when someone left and my
car went end of lease. The build quality is not up to our specs but
then again nor was Honda in the early days and look at them now!!.

Its gone now, I've got a Calibra SE4 and love it ( I only miss the Air
Con) The Lantra is now owned by my brother who got it for 4K on a J
    plate.

He likes it, which aint a bad comment as previously he has owned
Jaguar's, Reliant Scimitar's, Top end Fords and Rovers.

I'll give it the poor man's toyota award

    Cheers
