    Who's got a number for Goodyear then ? My Frontera has been sliding
    around in the wet like it's on ice, for the last 2 or 3 thousand miles.
    It's now done about 48k and is still on it's first set, with quite a
    bit of tread left. I was going to visit ATS and see if they'd change
    them, but if there's a problem then Goodyear can pay instead.

    I've spoken to LeasePlan - who had heard about the recall, but had no
    details -  and the local GM dealer about this. The GM dealer (PLP
    Warrington) called goodyear technical on my behalf, and then called
    back.
    
    Basically, Frontera drivers have nothing to worry about, the recall
    applies only to Landrover/Landrover Discoverys. The problem is with
    that particular tyre on the type of rim used on those vehicles,
    presumably under some conditions they deflate or roll off the rim ??
    
    The guy from LeasePlan was suprised I'd done 48k on one set, so it's
    off to ATS to see if they'll fit a new set even though they have tread
    left - I don't fancy winter driving on these !

Sorry to have worried anyone then... my Dad has a Landrover, but wasn't told
that the recall only applied to Landrovers/Discos.

    I've done 38k on the original Michelins supplied with my Frontera, and
    there's hardly any wear when compared to the unused spare.  I just swapped
    the front and rear as the fronts were showing just the start of outside
    edge feathering.
    
    I guess enormous tires + slow vehicle = v. high tread life!

    Mine started showing a little feathering on the outside edge, it got
    gradually worse to the point where I suspected the tracking. It then
    took about three weeks to find a place that could sort the tracking out!
     Kwik-Fit don't have the gear & GM dealers can't do tyre/wheel things
    on lease vehicles. Eventually I found an ATS who sorted it out
    straight away, but not before I'd driven it another 2k and really
    scuffed the tyres.

Talking about tyres......any ideas what the rough average mileage is before you
should get them changed. I realise that its judged by measuring the depth and it
is dependant on how you drive the car/conditions etc etc but people use 12000
miles as a "guide" for yearly mileage so what is the equivalent for tyres ??

The reason why I ask is cos I have done 24000 miles in my Astra Sports, but have
had the front tyres replaced after about 5000........obviously this leaves a
mis-balance between front and back and also means that the back tyres are pretty
old.....I would have thought !!

    Unless you wheel spin at every set off lights I would suggest that 5000
    miles is a ridiculously low mileage on a set of tyres. Perhaps the
    tracking was out.
    
    I used to drive a Fiesta RS turbo and got 20000 miles out of the front set
    (the rear were still going strong at 60000 miles) however other guys
    that had them only got about 10000 miles.
    
    Performance tyres tend to only do lower mileages because the rubber
    compound is softer and the cars are normally driven harder.
    
    As a rough average I would say that on a front wheel drive car that the
    the front set would last between 20000 to 25000 miles and the rear
    twice that distance.
    
    With old tyres with lots of tread left you have to check the walls of
    the tyres for signs of cracking. Get a tyre place to do a free check if
    you are worried. For info I once had a 10 year old Renault with 70000
    miles on the clock with the original set of tyres on the back with
    loads of tread left but the wall were getting a bit flakey so I got
    them replaced.

    So long as the tread is legal and the sidewalls are healthy and free
    from cracks, I don't see as it matters how 'old' the tyres are or how
    many miles they've done. 
    
    Also, I've never heard any problems arising from significantly
    different ages or tread depths between front and rear - again so long
    as they're all healthy.

    I'm not sure what's fitted as standard on the Astra Sport, but the
    Firestone's that were on the Cavalier (2.0 16v) from new didn't last
    so well for me, I got 15k from them before they started to go down to
    the marker (2.0mm?)
    
    The Dunlops that were fitted aren't a patch on the original equipment
    tyres (Leaseplan being tight), but they are lasting a lot better - 18K
    so far with no serious deterioration.

    Vauxhall inform me that similar tread depth front and rear is
    preferable on their 4x4 vehicles, which from another topic I believe
    that you have. I don't know if it is real, or a Vauxhall attempt to
    take more money for having tyres changed round. Similarly ATS have,
    with Hertz approval changed all four of my tyres to ensure similar
    compound front and rear.  This is for the Calibra however, may not be
    as critical for off road.

   I told my Dad what had been said to you - and he gave me more info that he
was given yesterday when he went to get his new tyres. (He was not asked the
type of veheicle at any stage....but was asked for chassis number and vehicle
registration number when talking to Goodyear)

 Tyres  Goodyear Wranglers 205/16  104S  -  any sold since 1988 

 He had to go to Hi-Q to get them changed (these are tyre fitters owned by
Goodyear) They did not know exactly what the problem was, but understood it to
be that the tread may start lifting on them.

    Thanks for that Elaine, I've just spoken to Goodyear. The story is, if
    you have Goodyear Wranglers with the code 104S on them, they will be
    replaced by Goodyear FOC.
    
    You need to ring them (0800 317985) and give them the chassis number of
    the vehicle and registration number. They will then issue you with an
    order number, and presumably make arrangements for your tyres to be
    changed  - I haven't done this bit yet, as I can't remember the Chassis
    number %^)

Does this mean that the info you were given via GM was wrong - ie there could be
a problem on Fronteras?  I bit worrying if different lines of enquiry are giving
different answers.......

Sorry if my note was mis-leading, I didn't have the front tyres replaced after
5000 miles cos of wear.....I got a puncture in one and a split sidewall in the
other. You lot must have thought I was some kind of nutter !!

    Elaine, I think the info. I got from GM _was_ correct. I think the
    '104' refers to the rim type, if so it may be that the '104' is unique to
    Landrover as my Frontera and all of the others in the car park at OLO are
    type '110'.
    
    The lady I spoke to at Goodyear wasn't interested in the make or model
    of my vehicle, only the type of tyre - I imagine they just need the chassis
    number to track which vehicles have been done.

    I too received the recall for my Disco, I was rather excited at the
    prospect of getting some new tyres, the front two are just beginning to
    show signs of wear.
    
    Well the importance is on the 104 'S', unfortunately or fortunately
    (whichever way you look at it) mine are 104 'T'. these being unaffected
    by the recall. 
    
    The reason for recall is around the tyres loosing pressure, well I
    changed the rear two only 3 months ago for that very reason, I believed
    at the time it was down to the walls beginning to crack, unfortunately
    I have no way of proving this so have no claim. You win some, you lose
    some.
