I'm with Elaine.
It's hard to get annoyed if someone says 'oops, sorry'.

I think the apologetic wave of the hand does wonders. It can certainly
cool a situation down to let someone know that you're aware that you
screwed up or acted out of order.

| Apologise for what? I wasn't wrong!

PS the wave does it for me - I might still think they're prats but I don't swear
and curse.

| Clearly shoot yourself in the side of the head - not necessarily
with a real gun.

Could be missconstrued as a gesture indicating that the offending
driver should shoot himself in the head.
Use a real gun and do the job properly leaving the offending driver
with no doubt in his mind that you were indeed very sorry.
:-}
You could of course raise you hand (palm towards window) and smile,
then forget about the incident.

| If people make a genuine mistake - and are prepared to admit it, even if you've
hooted at them, they often just wave, (or in one instance recently I was close
enough to see him mouthing his appology!) I think the problem is were the
annoyance is someone either deliberately trying to 'gain advantage' - they have
no intention of doing anything which may placate the person they have just
inconvienienced, or people so unaware of the outside world that they don't even
seem to know that it is they who are being hooted at! (As in Jasper Carrots
"Never been in an accident - but seen hundreds" sketch :-) )

On the occassions when I've made an honest mistake, I find a whole bunch
of Carnations rather than the single bloom can help to placate the
offended driver.
If this fails, I just boot the accelerator and get the hell outa there

| .4 and .5 highlighted exactly my point.
Can a wave be misconstrued?
.7 Where do you put the whole bunch? :-)
Peaceful driving home, folks....
