| >>i also need a starter motor as well.
Try Motorist Discount Centres, Basingstoke Road, 01734 875592
>>torque conv back plate (ring gear is chewed) cannot buy new and the
>>whole assy is 150 odd quid new so i need a second hand one
You could always check out the same place, but presuming it's still
expensive and a scrappy is your only option, check out topic 1475 in
the Reading conference (RDGENG::READING.NOTE).

2408.3 | Thought of replacing the whole thing? | VESDAT::JKAXP1::Kennedy | Dr Chandra...will I dream? | Tue May 09 1995 16:21 | 7 |
| Get a copy of Exchange & Mart - I think some reconditioners of auto
transmissions will part exchange the whole auto box for not much more
than that.

2408.4 | been there done that | KERNEL::PRICEP | | Wed May 10 1995 11:18 | 17 |
| thanks for the advice but,
a the gearbox is in a1 condition and the reconditioners do not sell
ring gears or mounting plate as seperate items (the plate and ring
gear are bolted to the crank) ,belive me i have rung them and asked
b have tried all the local scrappies including blackbush to avail
what i really need is either a large dose of luck or a specialist
breaker as the 2.0 auto is a rare beast as the man at the rover
dealer said "youve got a what! never sold many of those chief "
thank you for any further input in advance
cheers phil

| Without wishing to put a downer on your hopes (you're right, this model
is a particularly rare beast - not so much the engine as the 'box!),
you might have to relegate yourself to the fact you'll have to buy new.
:-(

| (At a guess)
You'll need the manual pedal box assembly and clutch cable (I seem to
remember it was a cable clutch on my old man's 2.6).
You'll need the gear stick and linkage, which will probably necessitate
modification of the centre tunnel, or get the manual model's
equivalent.
Speedo drive could well be different, requiring the appropriate speedo
cable, dial and drive.
Then ofcourse is the gearbox mounts, and gearbox itself, presuming it
bolts directly onto the engine without any different bellhousing.
Then the driveshaft could well be different.
etc etc
All in all, not a job I'd like to do, but it's probably possible.
Cheers,
Dan

2408.8 | Complete car? | CHEFS::BARRON_D | | Fri May 12 1995 17:47 | 14 |
| Another silly idea?
What about getting a complete doner car from the scrappy? One that
failed the MOT because of rot or some such. At least you'd have all the
mechanicals.
There are a choice of engines here, 2.3 2.6 3.5.
I bought a 2.6SE manual for three month back in 1988 and agreed a price
to return it to the dealer. This worked out cheaper than hiring. I
found the car very comfortable, but I do remember that there are two
spark plugs hidden by the manifold and difficult to extract.

| What about the Rover Centre? They "break" Rovers!
Inside the M25 off the end of the M11 I think.
