| I *thought* it looked very plain, nothing to distinguish it from the
low-end Astras.
Seemed quite fast when I followed one in My R19 16v

| Hi Grahame,
I've just got one on the scheme..impressed so far, I also drove the demonstrator
from Wadham Kenning.
As reply -.1 states the looks are "underplayed" when compared to the
old GSI but IMHO it looks a lot "cleaner".
Comfortable and quick...very quick *8-)
Good value on the scheme when compared to Cavalier SRI etc.
Any specific questions ?
Cheers,
Kevin.

2387.8 | 1.6 Sport, anyone ? | CURRNT::PAYNE_A | Stupid Thing | Thu Mar 09 1995 17:28 | 8 |
| Does anybody have any views on the 1.6 16v Sport? Personally, I'm not
sure about the steel wheels with the plastic-looking covers in the
middle.
I'm still waiting for Vauxhall Marketing to phone up and say they've
got one for me to try.

| How does the GLS 1.6i compare to this? Is it quite quick too, or
sluggish and heavy as some of the earlier models have been? I've
seen the specs but would be interested to hear the views of people
who have driven them.

Re .10
How does the GLS 1.6i compare to this?
... this one I *can* comment on ... had one out as a hire car while my
own was in for service.
In the short time I drove the car I felt that the engine response was
"lively" rather than mind-blowingly powerful. The handling and
steering felt very soft and "woolly" to what I'm used to ... but
probably about right for this sort of model. Overall it seemed a
pleasant enough car.
Now I would hope that the suspension be much harder, and the handling
sharper on the Sport models ... but are they ????

2387.12 | Pineapples forever *8-) | FORTY2::WILKINS | Testing is a desirable thing - like a Dentist | Fri Mar 10 1995 16:14 | 19 |
| The Sport models have uprated front and rear anti-roll
bars - the gas damped shocks are standard across the range.
I haven't pushed it yet but the suspension and handling seem
responsive - the ride is quite firm..fnarr..fnarr.
Some comparisons (albeit from the manufacturers brochure)
between 1.6i 16v GLS 3dr Hatch and 1.8i 16v Sport 3dr Hatch:
GLS Sport
Max Power 100PS 115PS
Max Speed 118mph 124mph
0-60 10.5s 9.0s
30-50(4th) 8.5 7.5

Reasonable space, comfortable ride, good extras, good price and pretty nippy.
Can't seriously slate it although it is developing a few little rattles already !!
