My wife's VW Santana 1800 has started to stall at junctions etc after is is warmed up eg. 10 miles or so. We recently had the 'Waxstat' replaced on the side of the carburettor, but it seemed to go OK for a few days after that, and now we're getting the trouble. The plugs look OK. Anyone any ideas what to look for? Help! Thanks, tim

Could be anything, but 1. You say that you've just had a new Waxstat so its worth going back to this area to check that nothing has worked loose. I guess this is an auto choke gadget ? 2. The weather has suddenly become colder & maybe only now you are seeing a symptom which has been latent for much longer e.g. tickover too slow/worn carb. 3. Was "something else" done at the same time the stat was changed ? Tony.

Thanks Tony, Nothing else was changed, apart from one water pipe. I have replaced the plugs and battery, and it seems a little better. On idle, with the fan heater and rear windscreen heater on, the revs drop to 600-700 rpm, and I think this is where the wife has trouble getting the revs up enough before slipping the clutch to pull away eg. at roundabouts/junctions. It is an automatic choke with pull-down until ( replaced about a year ago), model 2E2 carb. The Haynes Manual is uselss for this sort of thing in my opinion! Regards, Tim
2356.3 | Extra alternator load ??? | CMOTEC::JASPER | Stuck on the Flypaper of Life | Mon Jan 23 1995 18:23 | 8 |
Is your wife the only one to experience this problem ? 600 rpm seems a little low. Maybe this can be raised during the winter period. Tony. (serious question).
2356.4 | Seems Ok now | PEKING::GERRYT | Tue Jan 24 1995 17:44 | 15
Thanks Tony. The problem seems to be one with the carburretor. Took it to a local garage, and he has taken the bottom half off and cleaned/lubricated some of the valves which control vacuum setting during gear-changing...supposed to smooth out the revving between gears (over complicated carb really). At the moment, it seems to be ticking over OK at about 1000rpm, so I'm happier now. If it plays up again, I'll take it back to the garage, as the mechanic seemed to know what he was talking about. Confidence restored again! Cheers, Tim |
