Off hand I don't, but please can you let me know what you come up with. Our
motor club wants to run a similar thing that is more of an adventure than a
speed event, so again any suggestions would be really welcome.

2303.2 | How about.... | ASABET::JROGERS | | Tue Aug 23 1994 23:43 | 26 |
| Instead of a timed rallye, you may try one with easy directions, but
they have to pick up clues along the way. Such as "What is the name
of the farm with the blue doors?" or "What house number follows the
caution sign?" appropriately in the directions. By that I mean that
the question would be between certain road clues which would give
signals if they had missed something if they reached the next turn.
You could score points based on traveling the correct mileage
(no wrong turns) and points for correct answers. Weigh the
two depending upon the crowd. A suggestion: if these people have
not done TSD events, make the clues easy and obvious.
We had one last fall where you had to go into a package store
(there were two side by side, get the right clue!) ask for Charlie
and tell him "The cold wind blows from the North". Charlie would
then give you two cold beers and say "A gift from the Gods." At
the end you would be at a phone booth and call a number (which was
across the street). When the receiver was lifted, you were to hold
up your gifts and say "Praise to the Gods of the North!" Points were
awarded heavily for being at the right phone booth and following the
procedure. Needless to say, the last ones in got quite a laugh from
those of us in the bar across the street....

2303.3 | Make it a family outing | WELSWS::HILLN | It's OK, it'll be dark by nightfall | Wed Aug 24 1994 09:56 | 9 |
| You can take the concept of .2 and make it appealing to whole family
teams too.
I've taken part in the 'follow the directions and answer the questions'
type of rally on several occasions - generally known as treasure hunts.
The best ones included questions which were for the children to answer.
On the occasion that I helped compile the route our 3 kids came up with
some questions which were so youth-topical that you _needed_ children
to answer them.

| Be careful with treasure hunts. All too often I have come across a
queue of cars travelling at 3mph looking at every blade of grass trying
to figure out what the clue means. You have to be very specific and use
clues like -2 suggests. Our club runs "scatter rallies" which use grid
references and clues at the grid reference to solve. You have to visit
75% of the plots. You choose the direction, (you don't in a treasure
hunt) hence the word scatter. This isn't what we are looking for
though.

2303.5 | Looking for something that is all luck | CSC32::R_SWANSON | | Wed Aug 24 1994 15:28 | 10 |
| All suggestions seem to be good. We usually have a rally like .2. The
problem is the same person always wins. Out of 10 rallies, he probably
has won 8 of them. That is why I was looking for something that was
more 'luck of the draw'.
Any more suggestions?
Thanks,
Ricky

2303.8 | | OASS::BURDEN_D | and a dozen grey attorneys | Tue Aug 30 1994 15:41 | 13 |
| A slight twist on the gimmick rally is to have one sheet with all the directions
(in the proper order) and one sheet with all the questions (also in the proper
order.) However, there is no indication how the questions relate to the route
instructions. You end up looking for the next clue and the next route
instruction at the same time, either one may pop up.
This makes it easy to stay on course.
A thought on the same team always winning - get all the participants together at
the start and determine the teams by lottery! Match up the drivers and
navigators at random!
