| it may be a bit late but if you're gonna try thats a good place to start.
Has it got any rust bubbling through on the front wings yet ? if it has just
replace them cause they've gone from the inside out. Also the front valance
(beneath the front bumper) usually gets it pretty bad - I replaced the wings
and valance on my wifes metro and it only cost about 45 from Partco here in
Newbury, and then the local Mazda garage sprayed it all up for a favourable 100
- that did include a favour he owed me but it looked like new.

| You might be interested to know that, around the time your metro was
made, Rover bought a duff load of steel which was rather poor quality,
hence why a lot of early Metros rusted to nothing.... and why the
problem possibly cured itself around - umm, let me see - E-reg /1988 ?
Waxoil would be a good idea, though, yes. The front valance, sills, front
wings and bumpers, lower door edges and rear valance rust the quickest.

both front wings and the front valance have all been replaced

Make sure you keep the wheel arches clear of mud and muck regularly,
and fill in the stone-chip damage on the front spoiler regularly too.
This advice goes for all cars really - just common sense.
I Waxoiled my old Metro, but it went on the front spoiler. The rest wasn't
too bad (Y-reg).

2302.5 | Waxoyl or any oil | CMOTEC::JASPER | Stuck on the Flypaper of Life | Tue Aug 23 1994 14:44 | 18 |
| My neighbour is a car restorer, & he has 4 statements about stopping
the advance of rust :
Yes, use waxoil. Then use it again
Better still use motor oil regularly as it has a better 'creep' effect
Use only car shampoo & NEVER use washing up liquid
Clean the underside every spring at least
That seems to make sense to me, as I've often noticed that the best
bits of old cars are those encrusted with oil & dust in alternate
layers. Some of the auto car washes now have underside cleaning options.
You could try speaking to classic car owners at the next rally or show
or whatever.

Why shouldn't you use washing up liquid?
Dan
P.S. I tend to spray the hose quickly under each wheel arch in the hope
that it will take off any mud/muck but leave any helpful deposits (such
as oil/tar/etc) still there. As for my engine bay, well it's such an
oily mess I think it's safe to say nothing will rust inside of it for
another 20 years!!!!
