| To be honest, whilst 30 mpg is not brilliant, it is not unreasonable
considering the age of the car (although you haven't mentioned the
mileage of the engine).
The key to good economy is a light right foot, regular oil and filter
(esp air filter) changes, spark plugs and points (If it has points).

2213.4 | Fiat Tempra mpg ?? | FAILTE::BURNETTD | DAVE BURNETT | Thu Jan 27 1994 12:28 | 12 |
| Similar question.....
I have a 1993 (aug) Fiat Tempra 2.0 SLX StationWagon (estate)
leasemobile and despite driving as gently as I know how and never
execeeding 80 on the motorway, I can only get about 28 mpg all in..
What the Fiat dealership seem fairly clueless about is what I should
expect in terms of mpg. I get about 320 miles per 53 litres,
Any clues as to average mpg of said wagon??

| I'd suggest the power-to-weight ratio of the 1.3 Golf is not favourable.
My Dad had a 1.3 B reg. golf, and it was less economical than the 1.8CL
of the time.
Within each car model range, there will be an 'optimum' size/power
unit, and I think Golf's should be minimum of the old 1500cc model.
Just a thought.

Somebody challenged GUINNESS book's "ROUND BRITAIN ECONOMY" with same
car.
They used two cars both had power window, power steering,
auto air-conditioner and one of then had stereo system installed
and result was:
CAR #1: Mileage 6052 km
Fuel Consumption 216.85 liters
27.91 km/liter
CAR #2: Mileage 6075 km
Fuel Consumption 217.52 liters
27.93 km/liter
Can somebody convert those numbers to mpg?

Our Tipo 1.6 does around 34 mpg. Mostly short journeys, but a few > 70

Get an Uno 45, ours used to do 50+ mpg!

| Thanks for the replies on the gas guzzling Tempra... I'm going to drive
down to Solent from Fife on Sunday, partly to ensure I get my 18K for
the taxman, but also to find out what the consumption is like minus
traffic jams... (assuming a clear road that is!!).
As I am still in full licence protection mode, I'll be keeping the
speed reasonable (75-80) and if the figures don't rise above 30mpg..
I'll go and beat up the nearest unsuspecting Fiat Dealership!!
ps.. thanks for helpfull comment about the UNO.. but I don't think my
50lb Weimaraner bitch would think much of the boot space!!

| In the past I have competed in economy runs at Oulton Park until Ms
Foulston threw them out.
It's actually quite easy to achieve very high figures, we regularly had
people achieving over 100mpg. However I wouldn't recommend doing what
we did on the open road, apart from anything else it's illegal to drive
with the engine switched off and out of gear, the polite men in blue
uniforms reckon you aren't in control (remembering back, they could
have a point!)

72.299 and 79.356 MPG.
I used .625 mile = 1Km too.

| Totally unrelated but I remember back in the mid 70's they held an 'economy
run' up the Auto Road at Mt Washington in New Hampshire (US). This is the
same hill I did the hillclimb back in 1990 (7.5 miles, I did it in 9.5
minutes.)
They had the usual assortment of small cars and stuff, but I think it was
Car & Driver that entered a 4 door Lincoln Continental with the 460 CI
engine. Their goal, obviously, was to record the *worst* figure for the
run. I recall the drove up the hill with the windows open, the a/c on full
blast and the stereo blasting as well. I don't remember any of the MPG
figures.

| Thanks for all the replies guys.
I suppose the power to weight ratio is not favourable and
the car is a W reg (done 90000 miles) so I should expect a low mpg.
But I must admit that I was surprised at just how low it is.
Suppose I'd just better hang on until the lease car allowance
comes in (although that's a long way away !!)
