2207.0. "VW Passat" by PEKING::GERRYT () Wed Jan 19 1994 13:14

My 1984 VW Santana (Passat saloon) has started to 'judder' around bumpy
corners over the last 3 months.

Could this be a sign of shock-absorber wear.....or what do you think?
The whole of the steering geometry was checked out about 10 months ago.

    Thanks,

    Tim

VW Santana ? Problem may be caused by driving it round corners at more
than 15 mph !! Try changing the car.

Can't afford it....Digital pay freeze. I'll drive it 'til it drops, but
that'll probably be another 10 years!
It felt like it cornered more positively than my old Maestro!!

    Thanks for advice
PS.Actually drives fine apart from this.

Now the shocks have been renewed all round, it's weaving all over the
place on acceleration and decelleration using the motor's torque.

I think the front Wishbone bushes need replacing....any further ideas?

    Cheers,

2207.7PEKING::GERRYTTue Feb 22 1994 12:365
Well, the long and short of it is that the shocks were incorrectly
fitted initially, and now its all sorted out!
    Hurrah!

Not really the right note...

Anyone got a view on the VW Passat 1990-1993 ?

Nice car, but dull, realiable, costly to run, only go for this model etc
etc...

Title changed from "Jumping Passat!" as this is the only Passat note.

My dads been running one for approx 85K miles, a 1.8CL as
your first impresssion stated, it has been very reliable,
excellant m-way cruiser not exactly ball of fire as far as
handling goes.... Has been serviced by a local garage (not VAG)
for a fraction of their costs, plus model above cheap to
    insure..

    Cheers

    Mark.

p.s. heavy depreciation means they are a good buy for a solid! saloon.

    re:.9,.10

Excellent cars; I ran a Santana (booted version) for a few years, and
even though it was hammered whilst I was at college it still went on
to do 150K miles before I sold it. No real problems apart from CV
joint gaiters needing replacing once. If you're after a Passat
probably the best ones are the 1.8 and 2.0 (non-injection) engines, the
1.8 is OK, but the 2.0 is a lot smoother.

If you look after them they seem to last forever...

    Chris.

Thanks for the feedback - I couldn't _sell_ the idea to 'er indoors -
since she'd be the driver. Went for an H Reg, 1990, VW Golf 1.8GL in the
end. I just hope they continue to hold their value - they seem to cost a
fortune. Getting it checked out by a mechanic friend today.
