2173.0. "Cavalier scheme Dilemma " by KERNEL::LLOYDA (Don't worry... Be Happy ;^)) Fri Nov 05 1993 14:22

    Hi,

I am currently in the Car scheme and have been given a quote for the
purchase of my car. I have until next Wednesday to decide whether to
purchase my car for RESALE asap. I intend to staty in the scheme but am
looking at making some money on the car.

The car is a H reg (June 1991) Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 GLi in Bordeaux
(Burgundy) red metallic paint. It's done 41000 miles and is in very
    good condition.

The quote is for 5795 and looking around that seems to be a reasonable
offer. Has anyone any experience of doing this and does anyone think
this is a good bet to buy and sell on ? Is it the right time etc...

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Alan.

Alan, re the week deadline. This is wrong. You have right up until
the lease end to buy the car. Also car fleet will accept a cheque
instead of a bankers draft (I was told they prefer it).

For confirmation speak to Sally or Louise in car fleet.

Look you, no chance isn't it! :-)

Second hand market now goes dead until the spring, unless you're
    prepared to store the car.

My Brother's girl friend bought a G reg sierra GLS 2.0i DOHC last December
at auction for 3900 with 33,000 on the clock.

Auction prices usually pick in in January as dealers get the stock in
    ready for spring.

My letter from car fleet says...

    		If you wish to
purchase the vehicle, you must respond within SEVEN
days: failure to do so will result in you losing the
                option to buy.

I have to send in a 40 cheque and then I can pay any time up until
    the end of the lease.

My letter from car fleet says...

So did mine. Talk to car fleet. I'm sure you will find that you are
not restricted the seven day deadline.

For my own 2p's worth. The price you have been offered is not a bargain
but is it not a bad price either. I think you would be taking a big chance
buying it and try to make a profit. Selling it privately for that sort
of money includes too many risks of counterfeit cheques etc. This does
go on. One way to look at it might be to buy it, come out the scheme
sell it later and rejoin the scheme (I believe there is a local
decision that allows you to do this).

    Royston
2173.5I'd talk to fleet.SUBURB::MCDONALDAShockwave RiderFri Nov 05 1993 16:369
I would second talking to fleet. The seven/ten day deadline isn't that
rigid, but then again neither do you have weeks and weeks to get around
    to making a decision.

Regarding banker's draft vs cheque, again talk to fleet as rules may
have changed. However, when I bought my car they prefered I supply them
with a cheque. It saved me the fee for the bank to issue the draft.

>>> Second hand market now goes dead until the spring, unless you're
>>> prepared to store the car.

Remember that you will probably be storing a DEPRECIATING asset.

That said, can't remember if I did put it in the Conference, but Hertz
asked me for more than I could get in part exchange for a new car!

I perceive that Hertz are making sure that they are the only ones who
will make any money on the disposal. Sure as hell they won't be storing the car
until the prices rise. I would think that the loss of interest (or interest
paid on a loan even more so) between now and "when prices pick up" would offset
most of any profit you might make.

2173.7NOt sure but....KERNEL::MORGANIJust when you thought it was safe...Mon Nov 08 1993 07:0812
It seems to me that the second hand prices that people are getting quoted are
somewhat higher than other companies - for xample my brother-in-law got a
quote of around 6k for his Rover 820SLi J plate not sure of the miles, but I
think around 40K.

At the price you've got I would be suprised if you could make any money selling
for profit - although it is a reasonable price it sure isn't bargain
basement. - check out TVT see what sort of prices seem the norm in there -
after all you'll probably end up advertising it in there :-)

    Hi,

I've decided not to purchase the car. I've spoken to several dealers
that have said there are so many unsold cars available from the last L
registration that used car prices have dropped considerably. I was
quoted a trade price of 4400.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

Might be interesting to find out at which Auction it will be sold, see what it
fetches.

re. 8

Did they tell you/quote you what used car prices are ?

Just out of interest, because I'm in the market for a car and am toying between
going to an auction and taking the risk, or going to a dealer and biting the
bullet.

I looked through several magazines and prices for my car ranged from
5000 up to 7000 (at a Vauxhall dealer). Apparently 4400 would be an
auction price. My quote seems high given the market and the price you
can pick them up at auction.

If you want to buy a used Cavalier with a full service history you're
more than welcome to it :*)

    Considering I saw a cavalier 1.6L on a G reg with 90000 miles
for sale for 4500, the price asked for your motor seems very fair.

But selling and buying are two very different things.

From what I have heard the prices asked by Hertz for ex-lease cars
are not bargains but are resonable and these prices are fetched or
    exceeded at auction.

    It's a manual.

I seem to remember the 2.0 GLi has been voted 'The most popular business
car (sales reps!) in Britain' or some similar award. It really is a
motorway cruising car though... great for long trips down the M4 etc.

I know it's a while back, but I wanted to buy my lease car (BMW325i
Sport). I was quoted 12,750 (fierce price for a 30 month old car
which cost 14,750 new!!). I declined the offer.

2 weeks later, some guy from Grimsby rang me asking about the car's
parentage....He'd been offered the car for 10,500!!! I'm glad I
didn't buy from the lease company!!!

    GLs has electric/heated mirrors?

Yep. I have the '94 spec LS which doesn't. Other things that the GLS
has above the LS is rear head rests and rear heating ducts and extra
reflectors on the hatch to 'improve' the look of the rear end. You also
    get an electric aerial.

Oh! and the '94 spec GLS had Astra merit wheel trims. The LS inherited
the old GLS trims for some reason.
