2156.0. "UK race tracks" by DPER03::Conferencing-User () Tue Sep 28 1993 16:35

Hi All,

I will be moving back to the UK (to the Ayr plant) in the near future and I am
looking forward to resuming my racing spectating. Below is a list of the tracks
I know of with Knockhill, Crail, & East Fortune being the Scottish tracks I
have "tracked" down.

Now the question is are there any other Scottish or north of England tracks
that I have missed? Indeed what tracks have I missed elsewhere in the country.

My main interest is in bike racing but the occasional 4 wheel race meeting adds
variety.

All info gratefully received...

Rgds. Steve

Steve,

the east ayrshire car club run several events thro' the year at Kaimes -
    quite close to Ayr.

there is an airstrip that is used for rallies near Duns (in the Borders)
called Charterhall - not sure of frequency of use.

Further into the north of england, there is Stobbs army barracks -
    also used for rallying.

Dont know of any bike tracks other than you mentioned, as my main interest is in
rallying.

Hop this helps all the same,

    Steve,

You may be interested in the fact that Knockhill has a bike race day on the
10th/Oct. Niall MacKenzie will be running his 500GP Valvoline ROC at
the meeting.....should be a great day out!

re -1.

as well as the 500 seies, Jim Moodie (Norton - 650 or 750 ?) and the likes will
also be there.

BTW The 125 class should be a good race as the championship will be decided
on the finish positions - I know the rider currently at the top, so I'm hoping
he pulls the championship off.

Isn't there a circuit called 'Croft' in the north of England? I'm not
sure exactly where it is, or if it is still open for that matter.

Warren & John,

Thanks for the info. Warren the only Kaimes I can find is just outside of
Edinburgh, is this where the track is?

Unfortunately I will not be in Ayr until November so will miss the Meeting on
the 10th. Niall has done a great job this year in the GPs and it will be a
shame to miss him.

Rgds, Steve.

Croft is just outside Darlington. I went there once, for the last ecer race
meeting. Wonderful, unfortunately the place isn't near London (it isn't near
ANYWHERE!) and there wasn't the funding to keep it going, the track surface was
suffering from the ravages of North East winters. Recently though, Rallycross
has been doing rather well there and having seen it on TV a couple of times
(when Screensport was still doing the right thing) it looks in reasonable nick.

re .5

Steve, trying to find Kaimes on the map is like trying to find a needle in a
haystack !

If you find a place called Muirkirk - (find Cumnock and follow main road),
Kaimes is right next door. - it is on the Ayr side of the A74. It is not that
near to Edinburgh, but if it is next to Muirkirk, then that is the one.

Cheers

Thanks Warren,

On the OS maps it is spelt Kames (without the i) which is where the confusion
arose.

A guy in the office has also come up with Ingliston race track which is right
next to Edinburgh airport. Anybody know if it is still used? If so what for?

Rgds, Steve.

Ingliston is very much still in use as a race track. It's short, I believe just
over a mile in length but you can see all the circuit from several places. I was
under the impression that the ACU use it too.

Ingliston I think is mainly used for single event tarmac rallies and car racing -
single seaters.

the chap that organises most of these events is in the phone book but I'm
bu****ed if i can remember his name. If I remember his name I'll post it.

- something like Gordon Brown Racing . Definately based in Cambuslang, Glasgow.

The track might be used by some bike clubs for racing , but of that I am not
certain.

Sorry about the spelling of Kames Steve, but to be honest I couldn't remember
the correct spelling - I only know how to get there !

2156.13How about theseDPER03::Conferencing-UserFri Oct 01 1993 15:4415
Warren,

Ta very much! One of the other guys moving to Ayr used to race Formula VW and
is thinking of restarting in the UK. He would certainly appreciate the
telephone number.

Can anyone tell the location of the following tracks?

		Three Sisters
                Ty-croes (The Wirrel area??)
		Langburgh (York area??)
		Tonfannau (Mid Wales??)

Rgds, Steve.

Three Sisters is in Wigan, I sprint there on a regular basis, also used
for karts and bikes, no racing and rallying banned as far as I know due
to the damage caused by several errant cars (read headcases!)

Ty-Croes is in Anglesey and is it's problem, it's too far. Used for
rallying and rallycross. There is a sprint course there on smoothish
tarmac but we could never generate enough interest to make a meet
worthwhile. Shame cos it would have been quick.

Can't off hand tell you about the others, have to look them up.

There is of course Oulton Park in Tarporley (not far from Chester),
Scammonden Dam, Baitings Dam and Harewood, hillclimb venues in West
Yorkshire, Aintree as a sprint and rally venue, Olivers Mount in
Scarborough, bikes, karts and hillclimb and several very good hillclimb
venues in Scotland, Doune and Fintray being two of the best in the UK.

Circuit racing is getting very elitist in this country especially
England, not because of the competitors I might add, but because of the
    circuit owner(s) ;-)

You are better off in Scotland and Northern Ireland (it ain't too far
from Ayr!) with a much friendlier atmosphere

    Mike
