2131.0. "Radio/Cassette Sound Controller" by SEDMTS::CLARKE_C () Tue Aug 10 1993 13:12

    A few years back I bought an Automatic Sound Controller for my car
    radio/cassette, made by Hitachi.

    Great little box - when the noise volume in the car increased it turned
    up the speaker volume and down when the noise decreased.
    (It acted as a post-amp on the speaker output leads.)

    Meant that when you came off a motorway you weren't sitting at the
    roundabout underneath it having your ears blasted off.

    Trouble is; my car got stolen from outside DECpark about a month ago
    with the Automatic Sound Controller installed. I can replace the car
    but as Hitachi haven't made these for about 10 years I can't get hold
    of a replacement for love or money.

    Does anyone know if such a box is still sold somewhere or there's a
    brand of radio/cassette with one built in ??

    Philips have this feature on some of their top line models.

my Alpine 7525R has this feature, allways amuses passenger
as the volume goes up and down!!

They call the feature ASC (Ambience sound compensation) they claim
that it uses 'fuzzy logic' to not only adjust the volume but
also to alter the frequency response to compensate the the higher
road noise.

2131.4It's come home againSEDMTS::CLARKE_CWed Sep 08 1993 12:546
    Amazingly the car turned up again last weekend, complete with all
    contents !

    Locks needed changing, slight paint damage but very welcome return.

    Thanks for the advice.

    I don't suppose my car stereo will be coming back !

    Some thieving git helped themselves to it last night, breaking the
    central 'console' in the process - but, luckily for me, not the locks
    or the windows...
