2127.0. "Sports Illustrated on MA in F1 - Very interesting!" by STAR::BOIKO (ALPHA/VAX Performance Group - ZKO3/4) Fri Jul 30 1993 14:33

    For those of you who can get ahold of the latest issue of Sports
    Illustrated either in the states or overseas via mail or @ the news
    stand.

    There is a story about Michael Andretti's F1 season..it is VERY
    interesting. After reading the article I couldn't help but think that
    Michael will be in an Indycar come next year.

    I really can't see Ron Dennis renewing his contract next year, but the
    bottom line is he nor his wife are really cut out for F1 in many ways.

    It is by far the most revealing article I've read on MA's F1 season so
    far.

    BTW - I hear that Little Al Jr has pretty much given up on F1
          after MA's poor season. He made this statement just a few
    	  days ago. Send Robby Gordon or Paul Tracey in 1-2 years
          instead 8-)

Could you summarise the reasons given for MA's problems?
2127.3Sandy is SOLVIT::PLATTFri Jul 30 1993 16:236
    I, too, read the article in SI. If I read between the lines correctly,
    Michael's problem is his wife, Sandy. The only time he's scored F1
    points this year were the times she wasn't around for the weekends.
    The article also mentioned that even the McLaren team was banning
    together to keep her away from trackside on racing weekends.

    Michael Andretti must be the biggest disappointment of the year. He
    rarely does more than ten laps, and even when he does he is simply not
    fast. He lacks all the talent and class of Papa Mario. I'm sure that
    Senna sets a cracking pace, but the distance between the two is
    sometimes colossal. Did he really win the Indycar championship last year?

    I'm sure that Mika would have done much better.

    No he didn't. Bobby Rahal won it last year. Michael was second, 4
    points behind him.

2127.6Micheal = Sloppy?YUPPY::PATEMANScuba Dive in my Think TankTue Aug 03 1993 12:458
    Interesting comment by the ESPN Europe commentators on Sunday (Guy
    Hobbs & ???) that Michael was a "sloppy" driver and the he could get
    away with it in Indy but not in F1. I would reckon that his experiences
    will stop drivers like Little Al thinking about F1 but possibly not
    Tracey and Gordon. However, expect a flood of ex-F1 ers in Indy
    (Boutsen, Gugelmin, de Cesaris?, Warwick [unfortunately] etc)

2127.7Replace MA with Robby Gordon in F1 - Yes!STAR::BOIKOALPHA/VAX Performance Group - ZKO3/4Tue Aug 03 1993 16:105
    I read somewhere that Robby Gordon has stated that he has (ie. Ford)
    sights set on racing in F1. With the help of Mikey K @ Ford I can see it
    happen.

2127.8Hi there honey...IOSG::DUTTNigel DuttTue Aug 03 1993 18:497
    So what is it that his wife does to affect him? Maybe she stands by
    the armco somewhere round the first corner and he just gets this
    uncontrollable urge to drive straight at her....

    I notice that Indy drivers do tend to have their partners in the pits
    while F1 drivers don't these days. So, for example, Roseanne Mansell is
    now always there while she wasn't in F1 (except for Silverstone).
2127.9VANGA::KERRELLPluck a Plump PlumWed Aug 04 1993 09:134
I don't think any F1 team will touch an Indy driver after MA, unless they bring
enough bucks to float a team in financial trouble!

Dave.

And I cant say it causes me to only complete one
lap...(finished every race this year!!!)

may be MA should get his wife to fix the car
during the week?....
