2117.0. "Nissan Silvia 1.8 Turbo?" by IW::WARING (Simplicity sells) Sun Jul 04 1993 21:43

My wife is trying to talk me into shelling out 4K for an E-reg Nissan
Silvia 1.8 Turbo. I know when I was looking for a replacement for my old
Cavalier CD I looked at a Nissan Bluebird Executive -- until the garage
said I had to come back fairly regularly -- just to have the Turbo checked
and lubricated.

Do Silvia Turbos have the same sort of service requirements? Does anyone
rate or not rate these beasts??

2117.1but I know a man who..CHEFS::ARNOLDMon Jul 05 1993 19:308
    Ian - I have no personal experience but know someone who has a Bluebird
    Turbo which not only requires a lot of servicing, but now due to lack
    of servicing (and treating gently at start-up and switch-off) now faces
    a bill of 800 for repairs. Also understand the suspension on these is
    very costly to repair. I guess that E plated technology may now be a
    little outdated.

I know someone who has had one since 1983 and been round the clock a couple of
times in it.... I think he's quite pleased with his purchase.

2117.3is the price right?METSYS::REIDceci n'est pas une pipe |Thu Jul 08 1993 11:0516
    4k sounds too much, considering it's 5 years old and
    in quite a high insurance group (eg 16).

    My Parker's guide (and I don't know how much you trust
    these things) says it would be worth anything between
    1300 (rough D/E) and 3350 (A1 late E).

    I haven't got one myself, but have a car of similar age
    and insurance group. I was shocked how low the value had
    sunk recently! However, if you can afford the insurance
    you should be able to get yourself a really smart car at
    a real snip.

    have fun!

2117.4I had a 200sx....BONNET::DAVIESWed Jul 14 1993 11:2612
    Hi,
       I had a Nissan 200sx for 18 months or so, which uses basically the
    same engine with a 16valve head (171bhp from 1.8 litres). The car was
    reliable, quick and fun (rear wheel drive), the only thing that that
    you may want to bear in mind are the frequent services for oil changes
    etc (every 6000 miles on mine), which could be costly. I'd certainly
    check for a FSH and maybe even get the car checked by a dealer before
    buying as I'm sure that blown turbos,etc would be costly to repair.
     As far as performance per Pound is concerned, I reckon that my 200sx
    was hard to beat.
