This morning on BBC breakfast TV there was a brief piece on how the Rover 600 is the safest Rover so far. There was a discussion about offset crash tests. I though these were a good idea. The UK crash test official body (can't remember their name) say that offset crash tests into a standard concrete block are not helpful. They say that if a honeycomb structure that mimics the structure deformation characteristics of another car is used, very different results occur. Setting a car up to behave well against (offset) concrete appears to make the same car fair badly in a simulated (offset) car crash. They did also say that the mandated head-on to concrete wall test isn't much use. All rather worrying really.

There's a picture in the Corsa brochure of an offset test which was performed during safety tests. Maybe this is just another saftey aspect to worry all us second hand car drivers! Andy | |||||

There was an extensive report on all this on "Watchdog" recently, cars that performed well on the head on test, often seemed to show problems on the offset test.......however, it was mentioned that any mods to make the car safer for the offset impacts would cost only a few pounds! BUT...I reckon that it could be quite difficult to re-engineer existing models to incorporate the mods. Graham. |
