| IMHO I think the new Corsa is exactly like the Peugeot 205 replacement
should have looked like. It's good to see a car-maker not just turfing
out another Euro-box !
In an article in CAR magazine on the Corsa a comparison (however brief)
was made between the Corsa GSi and 205 GTi... something to do with
smoothness of drivetrain I think, coming out on the side of the
Peugeot. The 205 comparison says to me, how Peugeot got things so right
first time around (and how off-target they are now); and just how good
the little Vauxhall is.

ah, but have they put in all those things that were "missing" off the Nova ?
Like:
central locking reaching the tailgate
deadlocks
a clock that you can see from the driver's seat
upper door frame that doesn't drip onto the seat when door open & raining
door side impact strengtheners
etc

well,I drove the Corsa on saturday, and I must admit I was very
impressed. The guy took me out for about half an hour, and really enjoyed
the drive. The car I drove was the 1.4i LS (hi torque 60 ps).
Good points.
Less engine noise in cabin.
Better road holding.
Better suspension set up (due to longer wheel base and wider track)
Better instumentation.
Windscreen moved forward 7ins (better side and front visability)
Bad points.
More wind noise.
More tyre rumble.
Slightly less rear vision.
I must admit that the looks have grown on me,and I think that it's all
together a very tidy little car.The interesting point about the car is
that each model of the Corsa is about 1000 pounds cheaper than it's
corresponding Nova model, and there is an improved optional extra list.
Some prices.
Nova:Merit 1.2i 3dr 8085.00pounds.
Corsa:Merit 1.2i 3dr 6370.00pounds.
Nova:Merit 1.5TD 3dr 9175.00pounds.
Corsa:LS 1.5TD 3dr 8060.00pounds.
Nova:SRi 1.4i(82ps)3dr 10030.00pounds.
Corsa:SRi 1.4i(82ps)3dr 8900.00pounds. (Very nice car/price)
(This one will interest Jane)
Nova:GSi 1.6i 3dr 11685.00pounds.
Corsa:GSi 1.6i 3dr 10975.00pounds.(Available from July 1993)
GSi.You can swap the sc201 Radio/cass for a CD300 Radio/CD with RDS for
no extra cost.Comes with PAS,ABS,C/L+deadlock,Alloys,Alarm(with
imobiliser).
When pressed the Guy told me that the price cut was to make them
competitive.In my opinion it's a bargain,i'm saving now!

The reason that the CORSA does look "Japanese" - (ie looks like all

He previously worked on the MX-5. Mazda obviously knew he was passed

RE-1
The first thing that struck me about the CLio was how plasticky the
car was inside.Don't get me wrong the Corsa's dash is plastic, but it
seemed to look better and made the car feel worth something.I found the
clutch action on the Clio a little unfriendly,it was very hard to push
in and did tend to snap up when you pull away, where as the Corsa's
clutch was very light. Both cars seemed to handle equally well, but the
Clio's engine seemed a little gutless (Single point fuel injection for
the Clio,Multi point for the Corsa)and it seemed to have no life. The
Corsa on the other hand seemed alive (but did need to be reved up to
3000 rpm before it let rip)the Corsa also had a satisfying roar to it.
Corsa 9 out of ten Clio 6 out of ten.
Only plus on the CLio's side is that it gives you a good level of
extra's as standard (on the 1.4RT anyway).

Collected my Flame red SRi on saturday. The car is a dream.I'd
previously been driving a 1989 Nova sting which compared to some Nova's
was excellent, but the Corsa is a complete evolution. The engine and
gearbox work together superbly (perhaps a little noisy at about 80mph)
to give good torque through the gears, and good response from the
multi-point injection unit. The car handles well and the level of
extra's and general comforts are superb.
In short i'm a happy puppy.

| Well there hasn't been much discussion here for a while.
I'm looking to replace my Cavalier TD early next year and don't want to
pay any more than I'm currently paying for a lease which is 2600.
As you can guess there isn't much to choose from at this level apart
from an Astra Merit.
The Corsa is a little small but considering the impressive list of
standard gear on the Sport which at 2500 is a much more attractive
option than an Astra Merit with wind up windows and no central locking.
The 16v 1.4 engine in Sport gives impressive performance with a 0-60
time of 10 secs.
Anyone got a Corsa Sport or driven one and could share some thoughts
here.

| If it were me.... I'd test drive the Corsa, and then pop down to Pooles
Peugeot dealer in Fareham... Ask to test drive their 106 Rallye
demonstrator.... Then let the heart decide.
If it has to be a Vauxhall... and you don't need back seats... The 1.4
Tigra is a far better bet from a handling point of view. (Mind you that
breaks the 2,600 limit.)
From the Corsas I've driven (though admittedly I've never driven the
16v 1.4), my overall impression I am left with is that, visually the
Corsa promises a lot, but in reality delivers very little.

| Had my Corsa CDX 1.4i 16v 5-door for a week now and done 500 miles, so
here's some initial comments:
Likes:
- heated door mirrors
- 5-door body shape (better than the 3-door)
- CD/radio - good sound quality - CDR500 from Delco Electronics
Dislikes:
- gear change 2nd to 3rd - bit hit & miss - guess I'll get used to it
eventually
- not much room for left foot - either rests against heater vent and
roasts, or keep it resting on the clutch!
- central locking petrol flap - very flimsy with a lot of play -
wouldn't take much to prise off with a screwdriver - I'll be asking the
garage if it can be tightened up
Things it ought to have:
- radio volume control on steering wheel
- lumbar support on front seats
Overall comments:
- performance not bad for a 1.4 (I'm used to a Clio 16v 1.8), very
nippy in traffic - haven't done a decent long run yet (most of the 500
miles has been motorway driving in fog - oh, yes, the brakes are good!!)
- a "nice" car - but not what I really wanted - I'd have liked another
Clio, but the changes to the lease scheme put paid to that.
So not disappointed sums it up!
Sue
