I've started this note because in this day and age value for money must be a large factor when choosing a car. A member of my family has just bought a 24valve 3.0i Senator,H reg with 30,000 miles for 12,000 pounds.For those of you that haven't been lucky enough to drive one,i'll explain a bit about it. For your money you get: Leather interior,power assisted steering,CD player,6 speaker cassete/radio,Air conditioning,full electrics package,cruise control, factory fitted alarm,and lots of other lovely things,including a top speed of 155mph,and 0-60 in 9.4 sec. I think even at brand new list price of about 27,000 pounds it's still good value,when compared to the new Jaguar XJ12.The Jag seems to have all the features of the Senator,(with a slightly faster 0-60 and the prestige factor)but it costs 46-47,000 pounds.I drove the Senator for a couple of days and found it so comforable,that I can't see how a Jag could have 20,000 pounds worth of extra comfort. I hope this note will bring some interesting replies. Andy.

2046.1 | Logically, we all end up driving Ladas ? | NEWOA::FIDO_T | The Prize Is Bigger Than The Price | Tue Mar 23 1993 09:11 | 23 |
Re .0 I think that it is impossible to start analysing what extras etc. you get for your money. If you take your example a stage further, you will see that the Senator is literally not worth the extra nK ( I don't know the list prices ) over a, for example, Sierra or Cavalier. It, in turn, will also not be worth the extra over a Mini etc. and so, following that line of logic, we would all end up driving Ladas or Yugos. Now, obviously that doesn't happen - after all, if it did, no one would ever look at any of the prestigious cars - because you need to look at the whole package, not break it down into its component parts. Obviously, there are many people who do think that a Jaguar XJ12 is worth it and it is probably the dream car for many people. I am not saying that the Senator isn't a good car, but I don't think that you can compare cars based on just the extras. Just my 2p Terry

RE-1 Good points, In this month's Performance car there's an article on the new Porsche 911 turbo,in this article a comparison is being made between the 3.3 Turbo,and the new 3.6 Turbo and according to the performance figures given the cars have exactly the same perfomance (174mph top,and 0-60 in 4.8 secs),the 3.3Turbo costs 72,295pounds,and the 3.6Turbo costs 82-85,000 pounds,and from what I can tell the only difference (except from the engine)is the suspension and the wheels (slightly larger on the 3.6). Is that really worth 10,000 pounds. Now I understand what Re-1 was getting at but it's just my opinion that if I had the money I wouldn't see any reason to blow an extra 10k on larger wheels and a better suspension set up,for the same performance. May that's just me. Andy

You actualy don't get the option as the 3.3 Turbo hasn't been available for a few years now. Shaun. |
