Always a good topic this, the soliciting of advice from people in notes files. The thing is that my wife will opt for buying her own car at the end of her lease (in December, I plan a long way ahead). We've thought about it a bit and here's our set of criteria: (1) spend around 7-8K pounds (2) car must be 1 to 2 years old (her company stipulates that the car must be no older than 5 years and I wouldn't want to keep a car less than 3 years) (3) enough space for two adults and two children (4) Gill's current car is a Cavalier SRi, she likes its performance, so it must go fairly well (no 1.1 diesals). (5) A hatchback or estate (6) must have 4 doors (7) We have open minds, but the build quality of the Cavalier is appalling (8) cannot be a utility vehicle (Jeep etc) My thoughts so far are a Peugot 405 estate, a Nissan Primera, a Sierra estate (lacks flair, though) Any ideas, comments on mentioned cars? Dave

Have you thought about a Montego Estate? A friend picked one up from one of the hire car companies at a reasonable price at 2 years old. In terms of Space it seems very good and does noty compare unfavourably with my Carlton Estate. Pete

No I hadn't thought of a Montego estate, in fact I hadn't thought of Rover at all, maybe I should

re.0: I'd rule out the Primera on space alone. Have you considered the Subaru Legacy 4WD Turbo Estate? Dave.

Hi I got a Montego 1.6LX hired for me to take some stuff (3 19" VRTs and a VAX 4000 + machines and PC's and VTs/14" Monitors) To Germany. Got along OK with it. Had little performace when it was so loaded up, and steering became a bit light at times, but it did take a big load for about 2000 miles without major problems. Comes with a few electric gadgets, but No Auto reverse on the cassette deck. Generally I'd say its showing its age a bit at the mo. Only go for it if Load carriage is the main issue. I've got a Primera, according to the recent What Car? test the Primera hatchback as the largest load area in its class. As for room in the back, an issue raised in here and in magazine surveys I've seen, I find it OK, I'll have to compare it to other cars. I've seen alot of Primeras acting as Mini-cabs, so they can't be that bad. If you got a Primera, you'd could pick up the 3yr 60K miles warranty and maybe extend it to 5 years. I reckon thats a pretty strong point if you have to go into your own pocket for repairs (-:} What Car? says the 405 is the drivers car in this area. Perhaps you could look at that, though there is no hatchback and the seats don't fold down in the saloon so loads will not be welcomed. There is also Toyota's, Honda's and Mazda's that could be considered. cheers Dave D.

Yes, the Toyota Carina looks pretty good (if you want something that looks like a Cavalier). Anyone got a Peugot 405 estate that I could take a look at (in Reading) Dave |
