2001.0. "Renault 5TC problem" by SIOG::DENNIS () Wed Jan 20 1993 15:31

    Hi,

    I have a 1986 956CC Renault 5TC with a problem.

    When the car is running at speed ,55MPH + with driver only, or at lower
    speeds if laden, an irregular "rattling" noise can be heard.

    I reset the timing and dwell as per the Renault settings, this appears to
    reduce/eliminate the noise for a while but it always comes back. When I
    recheck the timing and dwell it's out. I have striped and rebuilt the
    distributor, given it a good cleaning and greasing but all to no avail
    (or I would'nt be writing here !!).

    If anybody eles has had a similar experience and has cured it without
    replacing the distributor I would like to know.

    Thanks in advance,

    Carl.

    Why strip the distributor?
    What makes you think that the rattle is coming from there?

    I've got the same symptom on a Mazda and it's the air flap on the
    intake to the air filter.

    Sounds like your's is "load related" so it can't be the distributor.
    More like dodgy valve spring or Resonance.

2001.2I'll check the headSIOG::DENNISFri Jan 22 1993 14:4015
    Bill,

    thanks for the suggestion, I had'nt thought to check the value springs.
    I'll lift the head and check the rocker assembly, springs and valves,
    its certinaly a good possability.

    I had felt that the distriburtor was faulty, possably the springs on the
    advance mechanism, because the problem with the rattling reduces for a
    while after I reset the timing. I was VERY reluctant to spend IR60 pounds
    on a replacement destributor if it wasn't a 100% sure fired cure.

    I'll keep you posted, thanks,

    Carl.

    Bill,

    Problem fixed.

    When I lifted the head I discovered two things :-

    A head mounting bolt was loose, causing a small loss of water
    (0.5L/month).

    Coke buildup on the valve and piston crowns.

    Cleaned all this off, reassembled everything and its running like new.

    Thanks again for the suggestion,

    Carl.
