1987.0. "New Escort Estate - comments?" by PEKING::GERRYT () Wed Jan 13 1993 17:38

Has anyone got or tried out the new Escort Estate with the 1.8 litre
    Deisel engine?
Any impressions of the drive, luggage capacities/towing capabilities?

If anyone has the petrol version, perhaps they can comment on the
    fitments and luggage capacities etc?

    Thanks.

I considered the Escort, there's a topic in here all about "big"
Estates. It lost out to the Peugeot 405 TD. By a mile I might add. The
Escort had many things in its favour, not least of which is the fact
that I've had sterling and faultless service from the one I still own
and drive. However, the fuel economy and very lively performance of the
larger Peugeot 405 won the day. I have no regrets. The Escort Diesel is
    a dog of an engine.

    Hello,

I've had my 1.8D Escort Clipper CLX almost a year now and I'm very
happy with it. I must also add that this car was bought as a
replacement for an older Escort saloon with the same engine, which ran
faultessly for the 3 years I had it. The reason why I chose it can be
summarized in one word: PRICE. I don't know about the price of Fords in
the UK but over here in France, in addition to being very reasonable to
start with, there was no price difference at all between diesel and
    petrol version.

I must say I don't agree with most of the comments in .-1: for a start,
you've got to compare what's compareable, i.e. the Escort and the Pug
are in two totally difference price brackets; you do get more with the
latter, but you also have to fork out substantially more dosh upfront.
I also don't think it's "a dog of an engine", on the contrary, it's
doing quite well considering its size and economy is very good (6l /
100km, if that means anything to you).

Basically, we wanted a car that was roomy (we have 3 young children),
cheap to run and reliable, and the escort fits the bill in all those
aspects. You just have to bear in mind it's no sportscar: acceleration
is poor compared to a petrol or turbo-diesel model, but it'll cruise
    quite happily at 80-85 mph.

"Clipper" is Ford parlance for "estate", at least on the
	Continent. . .

I called it a "dog of an engine" because it is. I take your comments
re: the differences in the cars, but here in the UK, the price
    difference was not great.

I get increasingly close to 6l/100km with every tankfull, AND I have
acceleration of around 12 secs 0-60, a top speed of over 110mph, and
better acceleration between 50mph and 100mph, in 5th, than most
utility petrol cars in 4th. It cruises happily at 3.5Krpm which is
90mph, and was still pulling well when I momentarily passed 100mph on
Sunday night. It's still only done 2.2K miles, so I'm not thrashing it
    by staying up there!

I don't want to enter a religious war, and I'd like to point out that I
still own and run a 1.6GL 5-dr Escort Estate of 1986 vintage. I *like*
Escorts. I just feel qualified to say that the Pug engine is far, far
superior to ANYTHING diesel Ford have put in their cars to date.
