1984.0. "old registration letters" by BLKPUD::WILLIAMSH () Tue Jan 12 1993 13:01

    Does anyone have a list of 'OLD' registration letters' locality?

    I know there is list in ROCKS::EURO_MOTORING 62.97-*  but that's a
    modern one and only refers to the nearest licensing office.

    In the old days the letter was more specific, eg.

    FF was Merionethshire	(now just Bangor)
    UN was Denbighshire (now Exeter, strangely enough)
    EY	   Anglesey	        (Bangor, again)
    CC     Caernarvonshire      (Bangor)

    Also it doesn't help my Dad who's got a couple of veteran bikes with
    single letter registrations; so where did 'A' and 'E' denote in the old
    days?

    	Huw,

    	There is a book that details when and where every registration
    	number series was issued. I have a copy at home and if you're
    	lucky, I'll remember to bring it in tomorrow.

        'A' was issued in London between Jan 1904 and May 1905.
        'E' was issued in Staffordshire between Jan 1904 and Jan 1925.
        'AW' was issued in Shropshire from Dec 1903 to 1921.

        There were about 200 Local Taxation Offices operating until
        September 1974, when the system was transferred to Swansea.
        From October 1974, eighty-one Local Vehicle Licensing Offices
        issued the marks formally used by the county in which they
        operated.

        This is from the book "Where's It From, When Was It Issued"
        by Noel Woodall (1976 - Transport Bookman Publications).

    	By the way, I'd recommend - if you haven't done it already -
    	writing to the DVLA and asking for the full details of the
    	previous owners.

        They can supply you with photocopies of all the documents
        previously sent to them with respect to your vehicle, and
        with luck this could include the original logbook.

    Details of registration letters/locations used to be included in the AA
    Handbook until the system changed (1974?). I believe I have a vintage
    edition at home. If I can find it, I can copy the relevant page(s).
