1891.0. "Cold starting trouble VW 1800cc?" by PEKING::GERRYT () Thu Sep 17 1992 13:15

    I'm having problems with cold-starts on my VW Passat 1800.

    The symptoms....
    Starts fine and revs to about 1800 RPM for about 5 seconds, then drops
    back to 800 - 600 - stall.
    It sounds like one of the cylinders isn't firing correctly, so....
    I've changed the spark plugs and HT leads already, ....but as it's
    got an electronic engine management system I'm at a loss as to what to
    check next!

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,  Tim

1891.1carb problem?EEMELI::HAUTALAGasManThu Sep 17 1992 14:015

    I think the problem is connected to carb and auto-choke. Does you
    car have auto-choke?

1891.2Yes..PEKING::GERRYTThu Sep 17 1992 16:474
    Yes, the whole of the engine managemnet system is
    automated/electronically controlled I believe.

1891.3f/i or carb?OASS::BURDEN_D'24 Stude - The only way to TourThu Sep 17 1992 17:534
From your description and not knowing the UK varients of VWs, does the
Passat have the f/i system or an electronically controlled carb?

1891.4King Lead???BAHTAT::OGDEN_KThu Oct 01 1992 14:2919

    I have had the same sort of problem on my present Golf GTI 16v
    and my previous Golf GTI.

    In both cases it was the King lead from the Coil to distributor

    the symptoms are if the car has stood for a while it wont fire for
    a while then it fires like on a couple of cyls then all four but
    wont run below 2000rpm, as the car warms up the fault clears.

    I found the fault on my current car myself after VW failed to find it

    Method

    Start car somewhere dark, lift bonnet and look for all the pretty blue
    lights arond the distributor

1891.5...and here's another 60 quid for nowt..PEKING::GERRYTMon Oct 05 1992 15:0918
    I've been informed by the VW garage that it is likely to be the
    "pull-down" unit, which apparantly works on a vacuum principle,
    affecting the opening of various valves in the carburetor...or in my
    case, probably not opening it, and therefore starving the carb of air.

    The Carb is a 2E2 model auto-choke non fuel injected.

    It's already cost me over #50 pounds for them to just check the carb
    out already...I'm thinking of hasggling over this, because it didn't
    fix the problem, and anyone could have checked the fuel filter, leads,
    plugs etc,which were new anyway. I know it's supposed to be a process
    of elimination, but these garages are onto a scam I reckon.

    I bet tomorrow will cost me another #60 pounds...which could buy me a
    LADA which would be a lot simpler to sort out!

1891.6some help...EEMELI::HAUTALAGasManTue Oct 06 1992 08:5611

    I have 1600cc Golf with similar carb and similar problem. For my car
    it helped when they adjusted the "mixture" richer. They also adjusted
    in VW service the rpm from 600 to 900 (when not accelerated). Those
    things helped much.

    I think this problem exists also with Digifant fuel injection, but
    not with Motronic.
