1885.0. "Ford Keys" by KERNEL::SHELLEYR (Achey Breakey Back) Fri Sep 11 1992 13:12

An interesting thing I heard this morning.
Apparantly any Ford car key (from 1988 onwards) will lock any
Ford car with the same type of lock.

This is a design "feature" so that if you lost your keys it was
quite to ensure the car was secure.

Now if this is the case I think it is undesirable as practical jokers
could lock cars when the owner has left them unattended with their
    keys in the ignition.

Do you think this a good of a bad idea/feature and can you see if you
can lock your mates Ford ?

I had a ford car in for a service to which the keys where locked in
because of that very fact eg mine where inside and the mechanic
believed that he had them in his hand.

But still i can't see what the benifit of this design is because you
could still lock the door without keys

The only reason I can think of is that it is a proprietary feature so
that a security guard could walk 'round a Ford car park with one key
knowing he can lock any cars up if necessary.

My Marina key would work on all locks on my Capri, even the
    ignition......Nothing new from Ford then?

A colleague once had one of his locks replaced on his Escort
incorrectly. Instead of any key locking, any key would open the door -
only the correct key would lock the door! This was only discovered by
    accident.
