1869.0. "What kind of driver are you ?" by FUTURS::FIDO (The Man With No Personal Name) Fri Aug 21 1992 09:10

According to a recent drivers' survey undertaken on behalf of VOLVO,

"there are five broad categories of driver and on the basis of your
answers, we have assessed your driving personaility.

This is not designed to be truly accurate, but to give a general view,
so don't worry if you can't recognise all the characteristics in
yourself. Everyone is unique after all."

Well, I have just had my profile returned - see .1.

I'm intrigued as to what the other four types are - if anyone has had
a driver profile from VOLVO, please post it as a reply.

This is my driver profile according to VOLVO :-

"This is to certify that Mr Terry Fido needs to remember other
drivers... well the world isn't perfect.

You are an enthusiast who loves driving and performance cars; both
together is your idea of a motoring dream. A motoring nightmare for you
is to be caught behind a very slow moving horsebox on a country lane
without the necessary horsepower under your right foot.

Your mechanical knowledge is very good as knowing what goes on beneath
the bonnet actually enhances your driving pleasure. Stylish cars are a
must and choosing one that says something about you is all important.
The more it says, the better the car.

You believe speed limits should be increased, it's for other drivers to
    catch you up.

Ordinary four star is not your natural choice of petrol, premium rocket
fuel would be your preference if it was available.

All in all, you know yourself as a driver and enjoy life in the fast
    lane."

    Thanks, Mark !

I thought that almost all of my profile was, to quote a favourite
project phrase of the moment, "abject b****cks".

I have absolutely no idea what goes on underneath my bonnet, am quite
happy with the performance of my car and I choose cars for the following
    reasons ( in this order ) :-

    1. Reliability
    2. Practicality
    3. Comfort
    4. Reasonable Performance

I think the profile was probably coloured by my (truthful) answers to
    the following questions :-

What is your current car ?
What is your other car ( if applicable ) ?
What was your previous car ?

My answer to all three was Golf GTi and this makes me someone who
"needs to remember other drivers" ( a euphemism if ever I heard one ) PAH !

I wonder what your driver profile would've been if you'd answered :-

    Volvo 340
    Volvo 240
    Volvo 850?

While you don't say what other questions there were, there is substantial
evidence that a "typical" driver of the type of car you have would tend
to fit the profile you describe. People as described certainly do exist.

However, there is no reason why you should fit the typical pattern.

As in any so-called profiling of this type, it is impossible to give an
accurate answer without in depth data collection. It seems that you have
been subjected to some kind of gimmick which shouldn't be taken seriously.

I can't remember the other questions off hand. It certainly was a
gimmick - I only entered it to win something ( not a Volvo, I hasten to
    add ! )
