1866.0. "Citroen Peugeot TU electronic ignition" by TIMMII::RDAVIES (An expert Amateur) Mon Aug 17 1992 13:39

This refers to the Citroen/Peugot TU engine fitted to
    		everything below 1.4 (AX/ZX/BX/106/205/309).

My wife's AX has started cutting out randomly. Won't re-start untill
you leave it turned off for about 1 minute. Then it starts and runs
    perfectly untill the next occasion.

No warning, no missfiring, very smooth running at all speeds, then just
dies. I had it once at 80MPH in the outside lane of the M4 but I had
sufficient momentum to signal and move over through the traffic onto
the hard shoulder where, still coasting along I left it switched off
    long enough, then it restarted.

The Citroen dealer intimated it is the electronic ignition (sounds
reasonable) but as this is a 1" by 3" by 1/4" module on the side of the
distributor and Citroen charge the princely sum of 87 +VAT Incidently,
as this is the same unit on the PUG engine's I checked with the peugot
    dealer: 62 +VAT (25 +17.5% cheaper!).

NOTE THIS UNIT IS FITTED TO EVERY CITROEN PEUGOT ENGINE ON AX's ZX's
    BX's 106's 205's 309's !

I'm not about to swop 'on spec' so I've fitted my own 'diagnostic'
tool: I wanted something that would instantaneously show me if the
module was switching when the engine die's. So I connected a wire from
where the module connects to the coil to the feed to the low brake
fluid warning light (taken off the switch on top of the brake
reservoir) As this light is multi-purpose to show
    	low brake fluid
    	Handbrake on
    	brake pad wear
I disconnected the other connections (two easilly accessible under the
bonnet, the other accessible beside the handbrake)

I now have a light that burns in proportion to the revs. not really
distracting whilst driving, but instantly diagnosible if the engine
    dies again.
