1819.0. "Smile, you've been banned by camera !" by SHAWB1::WILLOUGHBYD (The man with no personal name) Sun Jul 05 1992 15:26
Apologies if this note's been entered before. I did a dir on everything
since january and couldn't see anything related.
What's everyone's opinion on the new traffic laws which allow the
police to use cameras to catch speeders and wreckless drivers ?
I hve rather mixed feelings about it. I suppose it's a good thing for
town traffic, where putting patrol cars just to monitor speeding is
costly and probably not very effective at reducing accidents. I'm not
so sure about using this method on motorways. There are undoubtedly
times of the day and particular strtches of motorway where 70mph is
probably quite fast enough, but there are equally many occasions when
conditions should really dictate that driving at 80/90 is quite safe.
The use of cameras means that even in situations where the motorway is
almost empty you will still have to drive at 70mph.
I guess the simple answer to that is "well you would be breaking the
law", and I guess there's really no answer to that. What I find much
more alarming is that with cameras set to spring up all over the place
it would be perfectly possible to get banned in one journey. This is
the aspect of the use of cameras that really bothers me. When you get
caught by a speed trap, at least you are apprehended at the time you
committed the offence, and it might make you slow down from then on,
especially if you already have points on your license. But with the use
of cameras, you might not get a summons through for a month, and in the
time since you were caught to the time you know about it, you might have
been photographed down the same stretch of road a dozen times. So
another dozen summons' could drop through your door before you even
been endorsed for the first one.
BTW does anyone know what these tall poles with cameras on are for,
that have sprung up on the M6 and M62 ? Are they for monitoring traffic
flow or catching speeders ?
