1815.1 | Blackbush motors..sold as seen :-( | ARRODS::BARROND | Snoopy Vs the Red_Barron | Fri Jul 03 1992 10:58 | 9 |
| Hi Stu,
Have you thought about getting on off a wrecked car?
You could try phoning up Blackbush Motors off the A30 between Hartney
Whitney and Camberley. That only scrap shop I know of, there may be
others that are nearer to you.
Regards

| There is also a mod kit available that by-passes many of the regular
ECU problems, including converting to a manual choke.

1815.4 | Keeping your Cool? | PEKING::GERRYT | | Fri Jul 03 1992 14:29 | 7 |
| Have you checked the coolant level?....
My VW started to play up because the head gasket was leaking and the
coolant level dropped.
Just a thought in case it's something relatively simple, to save a few
bob!

1815.5 | Haynes Fuel Injection Manual may help... | KERNEL::LOANE | Comfortably numb!! | Fri Jul 03 1992 15:33 | 3 |
| I have a Library copy of the Haynes Fuel Injection manual at home.
I'm sure it has a troubleshooting section;...I'll have a look for
the system your car uses and any tips available..

1815.6 | NOT THE ECU..... | NEWOA::BOSLEY | What time to go, Nah cant be... | Fri Jul 03 1992 15:47 | 14 |
| Thanks Everyone..
I have checked a few things.. The Temp. Sensor below left of the
Carb. is sending Duff info to the ECU. hence I get the Choke playing
up. The engine run on and increase in engine RMP on sudden braking, is
due to a very slightly leaking Head gasket.
So it would appear that I have probably 2 or 3 duff SMALL
Electronic units, rather than that Big Black ECU unit....
Yours Releaved,
Stu.

I didn't read your earlier note in detail, but noticeable changes in
engine revs when braking could be due to the non-return valve in the
vacuum supply to the brake servo (if it has one)...

1815.8 | watch your wallet! | VOGON::KAPPLER | Spontaneity is fine in it's place.... | Fri Jul 03 1992 16:20 | 18 |
| I hate to ruin your day, but you are replaying the scenario my
father-in-law had with his Maestro.
After changing the temperature sensor twice, they finally admitted it
was the ECU, but that the only impact was on the choke, which in turn
caused erratic running, poor fuel consumption, engine surging.
My message must be, be wary of the opinions of "experts" trying to sell
you bits!
The choke conversion kits are widely advertised, presumably not without
good reason!
JK
p.s. Scrap dealers also like to sell you used ECUs at large prices
"Can't be anything wrong with it Guv, it's just a black box!"

1815.9 | Thanks.. But. | NEWOA::BOSLEY | What time to go, Nah cant be... | Fri Jul 03 1992 19:15 | 13 |
| Thanks,
BUT BUT my Grandfather & Uncle Both being in the trade have agreed,
that the units playing up prove that ECU is Okay at the moment..... So
I will go along with them rather than that of the BIG Dealer Networks,
as I doubt very much if my relatives will SC**W me around. `However' we
are not going to omitt the fact that the ECU could be Doggey, if So I
KNOW A MAN WHO DOES can get it cheaper than the main dealers !!!!! So
even then it will still be cheapish...
Well ta again..
