1789.0. "Ian Taylor R.I.P." by SUBURB::GROOMN (Captain Cornflake - Crisp Crusader) Mon Jun 08 1992 14:12

    Ian Taylor (of the Racing School @ Thruxton) has died. He was
    competing in a round of the Rover GTI Challenge at Spa when his car
    connected with another, spun through the air and was subsequently hit
    again.  Death was instant.

    That's very sad news. Ian was always good for an exciting race,
    especially at Thruxton.

    Seems motor racing is having a bad year...

    Having met Ian at his 'school' earlier this year, I thought he was
    a very approachable person. Another sad incident in racing...

    As a resident of the village_next_to_Thruxton this has particular
    significance. One of his former instructors (Mike Adams) and neighbour
    of mine also died earlir this year.

    I agree with John - a bad year.

1789.6Some good timesEUSEBE::STURTTotally wiredFri Jul 17 1992 13:1014
    I saw many fine F3 races in the 1970s, in which Ian was often a leading
    protagonist. Despite his successes in that formula, Ian seemed to
    disappear from the scene somewhat and I, for one, lost trace of him
    rather.

    I particularly remember him driving a white March in 1973 - I think -
    when he was often able to dice with Brise, Lafitte, and other leading
    lights. He also was part of the disasterous Uniprat Team along with
    Tiff Needell in 76/77, when his competitors were the likes of Stephen
    South, Derrick Warwick, Derrick Daly, David Kennedy, etc.

    I'll stop now. I'm starting to feel nostalgic. A sad loss indeed.

    Whatever happened to Steven South?

1789.8A mismanaged careerEUSEBE::STURTTotally wiredMon Jul 20 1992 13:5320
    Stephen South was an incredibly talented driver who - IMHO - was all
    set for a brilliant career. But he made a horrendous mistake at the
    beginning of 1979, when he was all set to accompany Derrick Warwick
    in the all-conquering Toleman F2 team.

    He skived off a Toleman test session at Silverstone, preferring instead
    to drive round Paul Ricard in a hopelessly uncompetitve Mclaren trying
    to secure an F1 drive. He didn't get the seat and Toleman kicked him
    out for failing to honour the terms of his contract. He was replaced by
    Brian Henton who went on to become European F2 champion that year.

    He had to make do with a seat in some Can-Am team or other and was
    involved in a nasty one at St.Jovite or Mosport - I can't remember
    which. As a result of injuries sustained, one of his legs was amputated
    and his career was clearly over.

    An excellent driver in F3 and F2 in the preceding years in semi-works
    Marches, he should have gone on to great things.

    Thanks,

    Yes it all comes back now.
