1779.0. "Meastro/Montego Diesel ???" by NEWOA::BOSLEY (What time to go, Nah cant be...) Sun May 31 1992 17:13

    Hi All,

Is there anyone out there in Notes land that runs either a Maestro
or Montego Diesel. I am lookiing for specific info on the Meastro DLX,
but any for of info would be gratefull.

There is a simple reason for liking these rather than something
like the Citreon or Renault. (I like them..) Both of these I think are
a bit Plasic looking inside.. Also I currently run a Petrol Montego,
so I am biased. But i miss the hatch back.

1779.2Montego estate views?ARRODS::BARRONDSnoopy Vs the Red_BarronMon Jun 01 1992 10:1515
I too would like somebody to tell of their experiences regarding
Rover/Austin Montego estates. I too am looking for an alterative to a
BX diesel and would appreciate a un-biased view. (Is that possible?)

I've heard the newer models are VERY much improved over the first
attempts and that these earlier models smoked a lot due to the
    injection method.

The reason for the change of heart is purely one of demand. I cannot
find a late model 17TZD estate under 10,500 and under 20k
miles...unless anyone else knows better? All the franchise garages seem
to what to rip you off. Who says theres a recession?

    That's because there isn't such a thing....
There is a BX TZD Turbo Estate (which happens to have a 1769cc engine)
but there's no 17 anywhere in the name. And as the TZD is the top trim,
and it has Turbo performance, you're looking for a mythical beast.

1779.5alternatives?PEKING::GERRYTTue Jun 09 1992 21:3519
I think reply 1 is far too biased.

Being the satisfied owner of a BX 19 TGD estate for 18 months, I can
agree to a great extent that it is a very good car...but, it is very
    plastic and thin!

I test drove a Montego Diesel DX saloon about 20 months ago, and liked
it...felt solid, good ride, and economy. This had the turbo.
The Maestro diesels are in short supply and are non-turbod as far as I
recollect. A|gain, they are supposed to be very economical with the
Perkins engine. Some BT vans have done over 150K miles without a
    problem.

What you may find though (as I did on the car scheme), is that the
Citroen represents staggering value for money. Having said that, if it
was a private purchase, and I was interested in residual second-hand
values, I'd go for a Peugeot 405 or VW Passat.

A mate of mine has a 405 diesel estate and swears it's wonderful.I've
driven it, and I was very impressed. The engine is superb, it's just a
    little small for me.

I'd second that. I drive a 405 GTDT, and I'm very pleased with it.
Plenty of room (though driver headroom is possibly an issue for the
Larger Person), decent performance and good economy.

Same engine as the Citroen TZD. Quiet, too.

48,000 miles, so far, and no real problems that weren't of my own
    making.

    Hi re .6..

Nothing showing for the Meastro 2.0 DLX (Non turbo.) - Coz they
dont do it.. But still any info on the S/H prices then.. with the
Montego dropping up to 50% thats sounds better than what I thought..

    Cheers,

One way of avoiding a big part of the hit is to buy an ex-demo,
I had the Montego at 4 months with 6,000 at 3,000 quid cheaper, and
previously to that I had a Meastro EFI at 3 months with 4,000 miles
	at 2,500 cheaper than new.

TIP: Do the deal on a new car first, then ask about demos, you can then
 	tell how much "cheaper" is.

I'd say not really, but it depends on age model (saloon/estate) and asking
price.

But by milage alone I wouldn't exclude it.

I was talking with a mechanic at Speen Garage in Newbury (Citroen main
dealer) where I always get my Lease car serviced.

he said there was one condition that the 19RD and TGD sometimes gets,
and that's a pitted head, caused by the strength of the coolant fluids
    attacking the alloy.
He said that if it occurs, the head and the complete water system have
    to be replaced! Sounds expensive!

Anyone else heard of this problem?

I'd go for the Metro if you can cope with a small car...it's better
built than the Maestro/Montego, and very frugal.

OK, I own up, I am the one who bought a Maestro DLX!!

Apart from the dated look and minor rattles, I have been rather pleased
with mine. I average 54.45 MPG (todays calculated figure) and have achieved
60 MPG at times. Even I if cruise at 80 MPH all day on the motorway, it
still returns 53 MPG. I currently pay 1.94 per gallon for diesel.

After much research, I went for the Maestro for economy and the very
good report the Diesel Car magazine gave it. Very blue smoke when the
engine is cold, but soon disappears. The 2 stage injection makes it
quieter than the average diesel and when above 30 MPH, nobody can tell
that you are driving one. Acceleration matches the equilvalent
Vauxhall/Ford petrol versions. Wind noise a little irritating at this
    speed.

It has a Honda gearbox and is very forgiving coupled with a beefed up
suspension to take the weight of the heavier Perkins developed engine.
Wider than the normal tyres. I work at the Crescent (live in Wokingham)
and quite happy to let anyone to view its to see the condition at
    33,000 miles.

    Well done Keith.

I'm glad you decided not to go with the 'herd', and have found your
    judgement proven to be justified.
If the Maestro had been competitive on the scheme I may have opted for
    it.
