1769.0. "Aftermarket intercoolers?" by UTROP1::BOSMAN_P () Mon May 18 1992 13:32

    I have an Audi 100 Avant turbo diesel. The new models have an
    intercooler fitted whereas mine hasn't.
    It does improve fuel economy even more as well as the performance. Also
    it makes the engine run cooler.
    Logical step, at least in my mind, is to fit an intercooler myself.

    Now for the problem.
    The actual fitting of the thing seems rather straight forward and I
    like wrenching. What I do not know is if any changes to the pump
    are neccessary.
    Any snags?

1769.1Allard for intercooler kitsLARVAE::SMART_AAmnesia is loss of ...er..ummMon May 18 1992 14:4611
    I am considering the same thing for my Land Rover Turbo diesel.
    Allards (somewhere in South Wales) do an after market kit that they
    claim reduces the intake temperature by 100C! To just bolt on the
    intercooler improves the fuel consumption (on the LR) by about 15-20%
    but with the metering pump recalibrated they claim (from memory) a 20%
    increase in power and 25% in torque for the same fuel consumption. The
    kit fitted was 327.

    I can get their number if you want it.

    Alan,

    So it s possible to just squeeze one in the intake ducts!

    I'll contact a turbo charging specialist in the Netherlands today and
    hear what they say. I'll enquire about the costs too.

    Will report.

1769.3Check the vehicle manufacturer's warrantyLARVAE::SMART_AAmnesia is loss of ...er..ummTue May 19 1992 09:1312
    The Allard intercooler fits between the grille and the radiator. You
    have to modify the panel that supports the radiator to create two
    apertures for the pipework.

    The kit is extremely well made especially the cast intercooler. The
    reason I have held off is that the vehicle has only just finished its
    three year warranty and L-R don't recognise the after market units.

    BTW I did look at fitting the intercooler off the latest direct
    injection engines. This comes as aprt of the radiator. By the time I
    had bought all the parts it was up to 450 and L-R still would not
    accept any warranty claims!
1769.4In doudt now.UTROP1::BOSMAN_PTue May 19 1992 11:059
    The specialist I called sells an intercooler for 350 ponds.
    A set will come around to over 500 pounds. Mounting will need extensive
    pump and timing adjustment.
    The complete fitting will cost me approx. 750 pounds including labour.

    I find this a bit stiff for 10% more torque so I'll have to think about
    this quite hard.

1769.5I'll try AllardsUTROP1::BOSMAN_PTue May 19 1992 14:0114
    Alan,

    You mentioned in re .1 that Allard sell an installed kit for 325
    pounds and that's a more interesting price tag.

    With a 10% fuel economy improvement it would, at Dutch fuel prices,
    take close to 100.000 miles to reach BEP. I'll never do that with
    this car so probably I will need to write off some 200 pounds.
    Considering that I do a lot of travelling with two adults, four
    big dogs, accompaning lugage nd a Caravan this sounds like a good
    "investment". Also, imagine doing 900 miles on one tank filling!
    So yes I would like their number and drop them a line.
