1767.0. "Vauxhall Victor info requested" by OASS::BURDEN_D ('24 Stude - The only way to Tour) Thu May 14 1992 16:40

I saw this request on the internet this morning. Can someone reply
here with info about this car?

-------

Well, as if I didn't have enough projects already, I brought
home a `60 Vauxhall Victor Super last night. I mentioned this
to a local English car shop, but they couldn't stop laughing
long enough to give me any information, so without TOO much
laughing, does anybody have any info on this that they could
pass along?

All I really know about it is that Vauxhall was (is? I think "was")
a GM company in England. A friend from London said that even in
England, those types of cars aren't real easy to find (but she
wasn't entirely sure about Vauxhall's, the Morris-style in general,
I guess).

So, are they hard to find because everybody intentionally sent them
the way of the lemmings? Or because....? Or are they a dime a dozen,
and worth even less?

PARTS PARTS PARTS PARTS PARTS PARTS PARTS PARTS PARTS PARTS PARTS PARTS

Whether or not it's worth anything, I think that it's a great car and
if it's reasonable to fix, I want to, so...
ANY leads on parts places for this would be very helpful! The friend
that I am doing this project with said that he already looked in
Hemmings and found nothing, or at least very near nothing, related
to them.

Thanks for any info,
Michael

OK, I'll start :-)

Well Vauxhalls in the 1960s were not well thought of. They rusted very quickly
and thus there's not many left. Those few that survived however are popular as
"practical classics" and I would expect spares to be available via post from
the UK.

Is that the model where the windscreen shattered if you jacked it up at
    the wrong point?

    re .2;

Nope, that was the much loved(*) Austin Allegro that popped the screen.

    Peter

    (*) much loved by old men who could wear their hats while driving;
who wanted to replace their Austin 1300's; by people who liked sqaured-
    off steering wheels, ....

Actually, it was a decent car when they stopped making it; the 1750
engine gave it a bit of oomph.

BTW - Vauxhall is still owned by GM, although most, if not all, the
design work is done by Opel in Germany. Vauxhall is the brand name
used in the UK only; it's Opel on the mainland of Europe.

    > -< Vauxhalls didn't lose screens..., >-

Actually, Vauxhalls DID lose their screens. I just wasn't sure if the
    Victor was the relevant model.
After some thought, I'm almost sure it was. Remember we are talking
'50s here - probably MUCH too long ago for you to remember -
    regrettably NOT for me :-(.
The Austin models at that time were A35, A40, A50 etc.

1767.5I had a Cresta - It was great!CURRNT::RAMSAYFri May 15 1992 09:5816
Last Summer I had a rare Vauxhaull, a 1961 Cresta, even rarer because it was LHD
and finished in Pink and White with loads of chrome. It was amazingly rust free,
had a 3 speed manual box (column change of course) but desperately needed an
overdrive. The engine was really revving at around 60 mph. It passed it's MOT
with only a replacement brake hose and re-fixing the foot operated dip-switch.

Unfortunately I was swindled out of the car by an old school pal (ex) who sold
the car for me while I was working in Ferney, then couldn't pay me the dosh! I
saw it advertised a few weeks ago for 2750.00 pounds :-(

Anyway, back to the original request, there is an active VX owners club which
lists a lot of spares. They advertise in the Exchange & Mart. I'm sure one of
the enthusiasts out there can get the address for you!
