1757.0. "Aquaplaning" by BASCAS::CURRIE_I (Dyslexic snice brith) Fri May 01 1992 16:47

During the recent spell of wet weather, I experienced very noticeable
problems with aquaplaning. My car is a Peugeot 405 estate, the tyres
are Goodyear NCTs. Every time I hit a significant quantity of surface
water, the engine would start racing and it was obvious that the front
wheels were no longer in contact with the road.

Given that I have never experienced this problem so severely, I
wondered if it was the car, the tyres, the combination of the two or
some other factor. Has anyone else had similar problems?

My previous cars have included Cortinas, Sierras and Cavaliers (current
and previous generations). None of these showed such a proclivity to
    lift off.

Incidentally, I measured the tread on the tyres at the time, and there
    was about 4mm left.

Don't know about the car but the tyres should be OK
I have NCT2's on my Escort and have never had a problem (not as bad
    	as yours at least.)

I find about 60 with half right hand lock is best for me. Its great
    fun!! ;^)

Do you really expect 4mm of tread to be of any use in serious puddles?

I drive a 405 saloon with NCT II tyres, and only ever had problems in real deep
watery bits.

405s are lighter than the average Sierra shed, and it doesn't help (performance
yes).

Is this the wonderful front suspension/traction design that they
merrily advertised on TV (in poweder snow !) ???

    Re. comparison with Sierra -
Having driven front wheels will have a fair difference...

In answer to .2 (a long time back, but I've been too busy to log into
    Notes), probably 50-60 mph.
