| The conclusion that CAR magazine came to after comparing the 106 1.4
GTi (or is it XSi... or XTi... whatever) against the 205 1.6 GTi... Was
that, althought the 106 was undoubtedly the better built, more-refined
car, and in deed 0-60mph was faster than the 205, overall the 205 was
the car that was "more fun" to drive. Effectively Car were saying that
your mind would tell you to buy the 106 whilst your heart of hearts was
saying "205" over and over.
But I'm rambling again.

| I had a 106 base model from Hertz for a couple of weeks. Fun car, went
well and seemed well built. Boot space was pretty small, but for a town
car it was excellent. Only thing I didn't like were the door handles
which were like the old R5's.

I've had a 106 XN 1.1 since January and would recommend it to anyone
looking for a small car. As the previous note said the door handles
aren't the best but are bearable. One problem is the width of the frame
at the side of the windscreen which can be a bit of a blindspot
(my girlfriend seems to have more of a problem with this) apart from
that I've no complaints at all. Total cost was 6750 with black paint,
cassette radio and a two year extended warranty. If anyone has any
questions I'll try and answer (nothing to technical,I'm no car buff).

| I had a hired 106XN last week, and was pleasantly suprised all round. It was a
smooth comfy ride for such a small car, acceleration was good until you reached
any higher end speed.
Those door handle sure are stupid though. The only way to get used to them (for
me) was to turn towards the back of the car then try to open them!
Body roll wasn't too bad unless you were travelling quite fastish round corners
and it handled pretty well for a normal kind of car.
I think Peugeot have got themselves a little winner with this car among the
younger people driving. I've seen loads of youngsters around this area with the
XSi's... boy racers prehaps? ;-)

| well, it's the first anniv of my 106 1.4XT and not a bad year at all
ok it's no 205 GTI (sigh - had mine nicked) but it's fine as a town car
and surprisingly stable as a motorway cruiser (up and down the M4 every
day)
one real surprise tho was the turning circle - wider than the 205 and
also wider turning right than turning left (???)
but i must say i've slowly become quite fond of it and having driven
friends' Clio's, Astra's and Fiesta's i'll take the 106 (but want the
Clio ad girlie :-))

1740.6 | 106 Escapade Diesel | CMOTEC::JASPER | Stuck on the Flypaper of Life | Mon Apr 15 1996 15:46 | 19 |
| Well,
I went out to buy a quality used car & bought a new 106 1.5 Diesel
instead.
I was always pleased with a previous 205 I had, so I knew what to
expect.
The clinching factor was the package; big discount, no delivery charge,
6 months tax, years insurance.
Certainly, around town its superb. I have yet to find out what a long
journey is like.
Immediate perceived disadvantage is that the roofrack appears to be
held on by gravity :-) . I'm used to having something much more
substantial e.g. high tensile bolts to secure it, like on Cavaliers/
Carltons.
