1693.0. "New Lotus Elan [SE] Invoice Price" by XFORMR::FEINSTEIN (Eric A. Feinstein) Wed Feb 12 1992 14:59

I was considering purchasing a 92 Lotus Elan [SE], but can't locate
dealer invoice information. There seems to be a hugh varience in dealer
pricing strategies around this car. I've looked in all the US references:
PACE, NADA, banks, CUs. etc., to get an idea of costs, to no avail.
Are there equivalent references in the UK which have this car's prices
listed. Or does anyone know the prices?

    Thanks,

    Eric

The prices I have in this month's Parker's price guide are:

    Lotus Elan convertible - 20,370.
Lotus Elan Turbo SE convertible - 22,940.

US car prices usually bear no relation to UK car prices. What the
manufacturers can get away with asking for here, would get laughed off
the road in the USA. Brand-new British-made cars (Jags, for example) are
sold in the US retail for less than wholesale price here.

Don't know what the invoice is, but the car hasn't been seling up to
expectations and many dealers are offering very aggressive discounts.
The prices listed in some of the ads in Autoweek support that, plus
there are some ads that only state that they will beat any price.

I love the looks of the car, but early tests indicate that there is
still a lot of kit car from Lotus. Plus, when one compares the Elan to
the other $40k cars, it seems to fall short in nearly all performance
(and build) categories. What a shame since it has such a pleasing
    shape.

See the February issue of Road & Track for a comparison of "The Best
Handling Sports Cars". It's an eye opener in a number of ways. The
competitors range from the Nissan 2000NX and Mazda RX-5 at the low end,
to the Nissan 300ZX and new Mazda RX-7 in the middle, to the Acura NSX
and Porshe 911 Turbo at the high. The test includes the Elan.

1693.4I got an Elan!!!TASTY::JEFFERYI do not think you wanted to do that!Fri Sep 11 1992 10:3811
Hi,

I finally did it! I decided to go for a Lotus Elan.

I know! Its far too small, its impractical, but I couldn't
resist it.

The price was good too, 70, and they threw in 3 tanks
of petrol!

Sounds good......although I cant afford half a tank of petrol let alone
