| Oh that's easy! Fancy signposting an airport off a motorway, no chance
of that in Leeds
:^)
So it's right onto the M25 from the M1 then? (to Heathrow ish)

Yep, the signposts for Gatwick start at Heathrow.

If your coming from Leeds it might be quicker to go the other way
round, ie turn left on the M25 over the new bridge and get to gatwick
that way. anyone know the distance going East/West from M1 to Gatwick.

Try A1, M11 (past Stansted), M25 towards Dartford tunnel (bridge this
way round) follow signs from here.
Before anyone starts complaining about the A1 this a far better road
than the M1. Fewer road works, less traffic, and better behaved
drivers. I'm all for people using the M1 it keeps the A1 usable.
I regularly do a Dover to Wakefield round trip and this is by far the
best way to get between North and South, hardly ever have I had to
endure delays. I can't say that about the M1, in fact it's very
difficult to recall a time on the M1 when a crawling pace was not
used.
If you do use the M1 to the M25 go left away from Heathrow.

I don't know which way is best around (out of the rush hour, I find
the M25 quite usable), but I think it's a shorter distance to go
ANTI-Clockwise to Gatwick (some 4 lane sections too).

1659.7 | Gatwick - M1 - via Heathrow. | HEWIE::RUSSELL | Hari Krishna, Hari Ramsden, Hari Hari | Fri Jan 17 1992 13:20 | 6 |
| It's definately shorter (by about 20 miles or so) to go via the Heathrow
side, rather than the Dartford tunnell.
Of course, you could go by train, and save the hassle of the M25 completely!

| Hi Greg,
i'm not to sure whereabouts the M1 joins the M25, ie further
round to "left" or "right" but i do know that its between
45 & 50 miles to Gatwick from the Dartford Tunnel, and if your going
out of the rush hour i would go clockwise and take the tunnel/bridge
route.
I would guess that its about the same from Heathrow to Gatwick.
So you pays your money and takes your choice.

There are roadwords immediately after the M25 exit to the M23.
Although going to Gatwick and hence not actually through the roadworks,
I still got caught in the queue on Saturday from 3 miles out.
Lot's of naughty people driving down the hard shoulder to get to the
exit.
