1656.0. "Cheap Insurance ?" by LARVAE::MANSFIELD_S (An English Sarah) Tue Jan 14 1992 16:54

Has anyone got any advice on cheap insurance companies/ brokers ?

I've just been getting a couple of quotes for 'Millie' Mazda (323 SE
EXEC) who I shall be buying at the end of the month. I knew it wasn't
    going to be cheap, but...

Main problems seem to be - high insurance band, no ncd as I've been in
the lease scheme for the last 5 years (yes, I did mention that I could
get a letter to say I've been a good girl & not have any bumps for the
last x years) & the fact I need to use it for business.

The best quote i had was 639 from Pegasus (who?) with 100 excess, or
657 from Bradford Pennine (who again ?) with 50 excess.
Bearing all this in mind, has anyone got any suggestions as to where I
could get a good deal. Insurance is for myself + hubby.

    	Any suggestions gratefully received,

    		Sarah-still-in-shock.

Have you tried the AA? Some damn them, but they've been consistently
cheapest since I've owned 'recent' cars.

Others speak highly of Frizzells, but I've always found them dear
    myself.

I thought it was the job of the broker to find you the cheapest quote,
or best deal. Isn't that what they get paid for?

I thought it was the job of the broker to find you the cheapest quote,

That's what the AA are. But a broker can only get quotes from Insurance
    Companies who deal through brokers.

I almost always insure through C.I.S; the fact that they don't deal
through brokers is one of the reasons they're cheaper. Frizells may be
    the same.

>I thought it was the job of the broker to find you the cheapest quote,

well it is theoretically....

but :-

not all brokers broke for all insurance companies.
not all brokers carry all cover offered by an insurance company.
some brokers offer starter discount.

etc.

Thus it pays to "shop around"....
1656.5They worked for me!!JUNO::JUPPTue Jan 14 1992 18:2924

Well I hate brokers, they start off with a fair? quote then start
flogging you all this garb that you don't need. All manner of rubbish
starts coming through the letterbox etc etc.

One good thing that I got by being on one of these mailing lists, was a
letter from Direct Line offering me an extra 10 discount. For the
same cover I was quoted 87-10 discount, this when my renewal notice
    was asking for 145.

Ah Ha, I hear you cry, what happens when you claim, well I had my car
broken into in the car park at DEC Park. I phoned to see if the stereo
was covered (as I'm TPFT), it was and within a week I has a new stereo
fitted (350) by there audio contractors (Sextons) and within a month I
had the cheque cleared and in my account. I'm very impressed with the
service, all that remains to be seen now is what the renewal will be
    next year.

Their number for quotes is 081-686-2468

They do say on the form I'm looking at, you should be between 25 & 75 do
not require cover for an under 25, No claims within the last 3 years
and no convictions in the last 5 years (other than Parking or 1
speeding), and you have to be in good health.

Doesn't sound TOO bad (except the N/U - they insure my Marcos for about
100 quid a year, funny eh?). 30% NCB is ONLY one year so either he's
had a recent accident or has little insurance history, either way he's
not a good risk, but it does make you wonder about the car doesn't it?
Only worth 3800 and costing 680 a year to insure!!!!!

  >> little under 1000 to insure a 1.0L (basic model) fully comprehensive.

If you don't mind me asking, how much is your 1.0L worth? Is fully
comp. really necessary? I can tell you, there's no way on earth I'd
shell out 1000 of my hard earned dosh to an insurance company!

Ian (whose Metro 1.3 costs 90 TPFT with protected NCB).
1656.16I used the AABAHTAT::KINNEARThu Jan 16 1992 17:1617
I used the AA when insuring my wife's W reg Metro L. We accepted a quote
from the London and Edinburgh Insurance Company for 100 TPFT. The car
was new to us, my wife had held a clean licence for 11 years and this
was her first car, so she had no "no claims bonus". I drive a company
car and it worked out cheaper to insure the car in my wife's name, (I
had 3 points on my licence dating back to 1986). The insurance was
    valid from 7-SEP-1991.

When we received our documents from the AA we also received a booklet
of vouchers for eg hire cars, free weekend hotel accommodation (which
we will definately be using) etc. This was an unexpected bonus on what
we thought was a good insurance price.

So give the AA a try, it may be worthwhile!

    re .15
Ian, the 1.0L is worth approx 4200 pounds (retail). Fully
comprehensive is a must really. The problem is that although it is a
basic model (no head rests, LCD clock, seat belts, soft carpet, heater
et al) It will travel at speeds inexcess of 160 mph, throws 138 bhp
at the ground, weighs alittle over 400lbs (wet weight), lifts the front
wheel at the slightest sign of hard acceleration and laughs at traffic
    jams.......oh and it's.....A B I K E......

    I've been driving 30 years/20k miles pa now without a claim, & don't

Give Fleet a call and they'll write a letter to whom it may concern
indicating the fact that you've been a 'model' citizen. Most Ins Co's

These groups are out of date. There are now far more groups and some cars
like the XR2 have been significantly repositioned upwards.

    re: .19

    Colin,

My story is similar to yours, best deal was from the AA.

They offered me a 50% discount, reason follows :

My wife has a car, max discount, me as additional driver. I transferred
her policy to my car ! Simple. isnt it ?

Oh, by the way I didnt leave her high & dry, the AA offered her a 50%
discount on the strength of her excellent driving record/NCB. The car
which was cheaper to insure was the one bearing only 50% discount.
Hopefully at next renewal both policies will be max. NCD.

The AA were also the cheapest broker. If you can get hold of a decent
broker though who will MAKE AN EFFORT, some insurance companies will
offer substantial discounts for 2 policies issued for 2 cars at the
    same time.

Ensure the Insurance company is aware of main user/business user !

    	Tony.

I've finally got a quote that I can live with from City Insurance
brokers in Winchester, company is good ol' Zurich Insurance & they're
prepared to give me max. ncd (60%) on the strength of a company letter.
360 is certainly better than 1000 that I have been quoted...

    Sarah.
1656.24AEOEN2::MATTHEWSIn a negative brownie-point situation ...Wed Jan 22 1992 14:289
As I mentioned in some other note, it might be worth trying to check
just what you get for your money.

If it's just an acceptance that you have a NCB, then probably no
problem, but make sure that there aren't too many hidden clauses
(like paying the first 1000 pounds of any damage for instance :-)
