I don't know if you've found a picture yet, but I think the term
'Coup' is a bit misleading. In my view a coup should have a bit more
style than the equivalent saloon (Capri vs Cortina, Calibra vs
Cavalier, Celica vs Camry - Ok there're exceptions! :^)), but the 3
series coup in the spy shots looks little more than a 2 door saloon
and none the better for the lack of the doors.
I've yet to see one in the flesh and I've no doubt BMW will take the
yuppie market (is there still one?) by storm with these cars, but
unless it looks a great deal better in the metal than the photos I
reckon BM have missed the boat with this car.

Re - .2
Seen a couple of these 2-door 3-series around Munich and
don't think they look ANY better in the flesh. I agree with
you Mark, that you can't make a stylish coup by removing 2
doors from a saloon.Similarly I can't remember a single
cabriolet that I've liked where they've simply chopped the
roof off some coup (except perhaps the Daytona...).
I suppose the next treat BMW have got in store for us is the
2-door 3-series cabriolet !
Does anyone know if BMW are going to produce any more specials
( la Z1) ? I know that there were plans at one time to produce
a cheap version of the Z1 called the Z10.

1633.5 | 318 Coupe - different spec | CHEFS::UKCS03::MARTIN | Chris Martin @RDL DTN:830-5288 | Thu May 07 1992 16:49 | 10 |
| I test drove a 318is coupe yesterday.
Whereas the 318 saloon has the 115 bhp motor, the coupe has the 140 bhp 16
valve motor. Goodies like alloy wheels are standard as is the M-technic
suspension.
As for looks - externally the Calibra is better, inside it's a different story,
the BMW is ahead.

I agree about the outside, but is the inside really that good? All the
ones I've seen have had carbon fibre door trims and dashboards! This is
the car which Jeremy Clarkson described as having a dashboard made of
such cheap plastic that it'd look out of place in a Yugo Sana!
