I guess you want to know what to look for on a Chevette at M.O.T. time?
Well take this advice and don't worry about the avalanche of replies it
will probably generate.
If you are ahead of the game in terms of time for the MOT, then that's
good news. As a rule try taking the car for the test 2 weeks in advance
of the time required. Most stations allow 2 weeks grace after failure
in which time you can affect the repairs and take it back for a retest
with no extra charge. Don't waste time shaking the wheels for bearing
play or digging at the sills for rust, let the test station do this.
About the only thing worth checking is that the tyres are in good
shape!
If you're lucky the MOT will not coincide with the Raod TAX license
renewal date. If it does buy 6 months tax and the next time buy a years
worth. There's nothing more frustrating than having a car fail it's MOT
and the TAX running out at the same time. You end up worrying about
driving the vehicle to the test station and getting done for having it
on the road...
Oh and lastly, never go to a garage (certainly not one which sells your
make of car) for an M.O.T. they always have a vested interest. Go
somewhere like MOTEST, there's one on Reading.

| First of all welcome Iain to to the world of cars_uk.
It is a very active conference and usually any questions you have will
be answered quickly, but remeber be as specific with your questions as
possible as Phil said in .1 and you will get deatiled answers.
If you have a query the best thing to do is to see if it has been
discussed before. To do this type DIR/TIT=
If you find a note that discusses the subject don't worry if it hasn't
had any replys for a while. if you type REPLY and add a further reply
it will be looked at as we will pick it up when we do a NEXT UNSEEN (or
the "," on the keypad).
With regard your original question I can't add a lot more than Ian
except to check all the obvious things such as lights (don't forget
brake lights!), wipers, washers, horn.
You can get your car MoT'd up to 4 weeks before the current one expires
and if you give the certificate to the tester then the new one will
expire a year from the expiry of the current one (in other words it
will be post dated).
Happy noting.

Make sure that the test centre do offer the free-retest if you take
that option as 'legally' they are supposed to recharge you if you
take the car away. If the test is still a couple of months away watch
out for the new emission test (that is going to be a problem for a lot
of cars).
Generally, though, the idea of getting the car tested early, fixing it
at your (relative) leisure and getting a free retest is a good idea
(and usually cheaper than getting the test centre to fix it or having
a pre-MOT check).
Mark
PS You can drive a car without a tax disc to an MOT centre provided
you have booked the test. I would IMAGINE that ringing the centre to
tell them you're are coming would sufffice unless the Police are in
a really bad mood.

The really good thing about MOTEST in Reading is there is NO booking.
You turn up, leave your keys at the desk and wait your turn. In most
cases - not Saturdays or Sundays (yes they're open 7 days) the waiting
time is a lot less than two hours.
Now to continue where I forgot to go in my first reply! To get road TAX
you will need a) a form the DVLC sent you as a reminder that it was due,
b) a valid MOT certificate (only needs one day on it to be valid) and
c) proof of insurance (in practise your insurance companies' letter or
certificate) . If you don't have the DVLC reminder then a V10 form
will have to be filled out in the Post Office where you've gone to get
the TAX disc. Only main post offices have this service.
Ian
NB. 6 months tax costs 55, 1 year costs 100.
