1546.0. "Help indentifying a driver please" by CSC32::R_SWANSON () Wed Sep 11 1991 19:09

I was wondering if anyone knows who is the ONLY American driver yet to race a
Sauber-Mercedes. I guess he didn't do very well. This is a question that
they asked in our Mercedes Benz Club of America magazine. Looking at his
picture, he has dark, kind of curly hair with a receding hair line. They also
want to know when and where he drove. If anyone could help me find the answer
to this question it would be appreciated VERY much.

Thanks alot...

Ricky C. Swanson

    Ricky,

    I've been mulling this over. I'll try and find out tonight (when I
    can access my library! :^)).

    One thing appears certain, this wasn't an all-year works driver.

    That means either a Kouros-era driver, a Le Mans only driver, or
    a driver of Noel Del Bello's car in 1988(?).

    Anyone else got any ideas?

    Mark

    PS It's not a trick is it? Your description sounds remarkably like
    Mauro Baldi. He hasn't got US citizenship has he?
1546.2Le MansDOOZER::JENKINSseriously 'ken shabbyThu Sep 12 1991 14:089

    I agree with Mark that the description sounds like Mauro.

    I thought about the Noel del Bello car, but I wondered if that
    was a genuine Sauber Mercedes?

    I favour Mercedes at Le Mans this year.

    Richard.
1546.3Mine is *not* receding, it's always been like that !CHEST::RAWSONThings that make you go HmmmThu Sep 12 1991 14:203

1546.4Free Gift for the right answer!!!CSC32::R_SWANSONThu Sep 12 1991 17:4424
    No, this is not a joke. Our club publishes a FINE magazine on a
    bi-monthly basis. It is called "The Star" and is for members of
    the Mercedes Benz Club of North America. It has all kinds of technical
    information as well as articles on various Mercedes cars. This
    question happened to be in the back of the magazine and is a valid
    question. Whoever can tell me the answer, I'll send them a full
    color poster of the #1 Sauber-Mercedes. I'll also throw in a Star
    magazine.

    The way the question was asked sounded like he only drove in one race.
    It said he was the only American driver yet to race a Sauber-Mercedes.
    It also said he didn't do very well. And I think he only drove in one
    race (I think) as I need to know when and where he drove. Thanks for
    all the attempts so far.

    Thanks again for trying to help me find this answer!!!

    Ricky

    ps If you have a favorite Mercedes, I'll try to find a "Star" magazine
        that has done a writeup of that particular model. A 1955 300 SL
        (a proto) was featured in our last magazine.

1546.6It IS a KOUROS Era driver!!!CSC32::R_SWANSONFri Sep 13 1991 05:2417
    Hope this helps...
    When you guessed it might have been a Kouros era driver you were right.
    When I got home I looked at the picture once more. On his shoulder
    it has the word KOUROS. Also if this is of any importance it
    says NTLAURENT on his collar. I can't make out any letters before the
    N. He also has a patch on his right side and I can make out the
    letters LIN or LIM. Hope this helps and once again THANKS for all your
    efforts!

    If we can't come up with the drivers name the correct answer to this
    question will be in the next issue of our magazine. I will post the
    answer then.

    Thanks alot!!!

1546.7Narrowing it down.NEWOA::SAXBYAye. When I were a lad....Fri Sep 13 1991 09:5313

    Right, that's a start.

    I suspect the NTLAURENT is a bit of a red-herring. Yves-SaiNT LAURENT
    are the company who make Kouros.

    So, which American drove for Kouros Mercedes and where?

    Drake Olson? John Paul Jr? Neither ring any bells. I'll have a look in
    the loft over the weekend (unless someone gets it today) and try and
    come up with an answer.

    Ha ha,

    No-one's beaten me.

    The answer is...

    Chip Ganassi!

    He drove for Kouros Sauber-Mercedes at Le Mans in 1987 as Johnny
    Dumfries' team mate. The car set the fastest lap of the race in the
    early laps, but soon retired with gearbox failure!

    Nice one Sax...

    But did Ganassi actually "race" that day ? Didn't Dumfries blow the
    engine during his first shift ?
1546.10Heh guys, I'm not used to a stick shift! :^)NEWOA::SAXBYAye. When I were a lad....Mon Sep 16 1991 15:046

    I think the 'box broke when Ganassi was at the wheel. I can recall
    my Radio Le Mans: The Video tape having a voice over of Dumfries saying
    "That's a pity. The car was going very well"...

1546.11Should I go with Chip G?CSC32::R_SWANSONMon Sep 16 1991 17:1218
    Our section put on a Pikes Peak Hillclimb this weekend. It was an
    event that lasted the entire weekend. Anyway, the editor of the
    magazine was there and I asked him if he had any replys. He said he
    didn't recieve any yet so it looks like were doing pretty good. Should
    I submit Chip's name or should we make sure. I can go to the bookstore
    tonight and try to see if Chip actually did any racing. What do you
    think?

    Thanks alot and if we want to go with this answer let me know. Also
    send me your address at CSC32::R_Swanson and I'll send you your poster
    and a STAR magazine. I think we might have a STAR that did an article
    on the Sauber-Mercedes team. Either let me know of a particular kind
    of a Mercedes you like or I'll send you that one. Please let me know.

    Once again, thanks alot!!!

1546.12Seems a sure bet.NEWOA::SAXBYAye. When I were a lad....Mon Sep 16 1991 17:548

    This information came from the Le Mans 1987 programme and the Autosport
    from the week after the race. I reckon that's as close as you can get
    to certain! :^) If you like, I'll check on my Le Mans 1987 video to
    check what I said about him racing being accurate, but that's where I'd
    lay my money.

1546.14It is Chip Ganassi!!!CSC32::R_SWANSONMon Sep 16 1991 18:577
    Mark was right. The answer is Chip Ganassi. Instead of mailing in my
    vote I called the editor and gave it to him over the phone. It was
    Chip Ganassi in the 87 LeMans. Thanks to all who tried to find the
    answer.
