1544.0. "Cavalier tip" by ODDONE::CURRIE_I () Wed Sep 11 1991 11:12

Before I get rid of my Cavalier in a couple of months time, I thought
it might be worth passing on a tip which I've found useful.

My car is a CD, which comes with one of those horrible cassette holders
(behind the handbrake) which takes cassettes (four) without their
boxes. I hate these things, as it is fatal to separate the tape from
its box. Not only that, but the kids can't resist popping the tape
    holders up!

As it happens, one of the ejectors was faulty when the car was
delivered, and the whole unit was replaced. However, it was not
properly seated in its mounting when I got the car back, and I found
that I could lift the whole unit out. Lo and behold, that left a neat
rectangular hole which will either hold six cassettes (with their
boxes!) or else can hold assorted pens, tissues, sweets, coins...etc. The
only problem was that the bottom of the box was a bit irregular - but I
found that a British Standard beermat fits absolutely perfectly to make
    a base.

I'm not quite sure how you release the cassette holder if it's firmly
fixed. Mine is in my garage at the moment, but I seem to remember that
it has a couple of spring tabs which locate in the bottom of the box.
I suspect you may have to access these through the ashtray orifice.

I'd be interested to know if anyone actually finds this information
useful. Does anyone else share my dislike of these cassette holders
that won't hold the tape box?

    Ian.

I think it's pretty damn stupid to supply a car with a tape holder of
this nature. Apart from losing the boxes themselves it is not easy to
see at a glance what tape you want to play. May as well just chuck them
in the door bin, and delve in a bit like a lucky dip, every time you
    wish to change music.

Gary. (keeping them in the boot would be much handier ! :^) )

If you give the cassette holder a firm yank it pops out with no problem
.I dont mind the cassette holder its the rediculous place that it is
    located thats the problem.

I found that when ever I went to put the seatbelt on or release it, I
found that I would invariably eject the cassette holders by mistake.

B***** stupid cassette holder, I ripped mine out ages ago. Just
replaced it as I get a new car tomorrow.

If they must supply casssette holders, do like ford, they give you a
partitioned shelf which takes cassettes, box and all.

I saw a J reg Cavalier SRI this morning with alloys!Does anyone know
whether these have always been optional or whether this is a new sales
ploy. The wheels made the car look a bit special(unlike those plastic
wheel-trims).The alloys are the same ones as on the Astra SXI(10 or 16
    narrow spokes).

It just so happens i've got a brochure on my desk at the moment and
    yes those wheels (5 1/2J x 14 with 195 60 vr14 tyres) are an option.

1544.9Cav's now with ABS as standard as well as air bagsCOMICS::SHELLEYBugs B GoneTue Apr 05 1994 11:049
Anyone who has just ordered a cavalier may want to stall it a bit or
ensure they get one of the new spec models.

According to an ad on TV they are now fitting ABS as standard and
believe me that will be a useful thing. I find my non-ABS cavalier
a nightmare on wet or greasy roads. It does great Torvill and Dean
    impressions.

So does my Calibra, but it's got ABS - see another note
for a discussion of the effectiveness of ABS in slippery
conditions.

    re: .9

I had a new Cavalier delivered today, and it had ABS (although I hadn't
specified that as an option), so that was a nice surprise.

    I'm glad I didn't specify it as a 100-a-year option...

Re.9:

I've driven about 80,000 miles in the following Cavaliers over the past
five years:-

"F" Reg SRi (no ABS)
"H" Reg CDi (ABS)
"F" Reg 1.4L (no ABS)
"L" Reg 1.7TD GLS (no ABS)

They all vary in power, weight, suspension, tyre type and size, however
none of these cars perform badly on wet and greasy roads. I think you
should look at other possible reasons for your lack of grip. If you are
still struggling I can give a few pointers or you might try and book a
course at your local skidpan.
