1378.0. "Garage contents insurance cover" by VOGON::MITCHELLE (Beware of the green meanie) Tue Mar 05 1991 14:50

We recently got our annual house contents insurance renual form, and I
decided to check on the cover included for the contents of our garage.
Not a lot - was the reply. So I asked about increasing the cover, and
the response was a quote for 125, with 500 excess, for cover for up
to 2500 worth of tools. (Including theft from the car at race meetings
etc.) This sounds rather a lot! Does anyone else have any experience of
trying to insure higher than average value for tools kept in the
    garage?

Try getting a reduction in cover cost by fitting better than average
    security locks etc....

Sounds as though they are classifying the cover as "all risks" which
means it's in the same class as the minks and Picassos. I'll exclude
family jewels as Derek's probably insured already.....;-)

1378.2Are car parts the same as tools?SUBURB::REEVEJTue Mar 05 1991 17:2612
Not quite the same thing, but when I was building the Caterham I asked
how much motor insurance would be to insure the kit as it was being
built and was quoted about 250. Someone suggested I should ask my
household policy insurers, and after some scratching of heads and
'asking my colleague' they added 8000 worth of 'car parts' to my
contents policy at the normal premium rate. The only question was
whether the garage was attached to the house, and brick built, which it
is. I recall the premium was about 25. My policy is the usual new for
old type with the Commercial Union. I would have thought tools would
    fall into the same category!

    .-1, Elaine,

You might be better off getting an insurance policy ( e.g. "Off the
Road", or "Limited Mileage" ) which incorporates cover against theft
or damage to "property" where you are keeping your Car. This includes
    tools upto #1000 pounds only.

The policy I enquired about costs #5 per #1000 vehicle value. Don't
know if this works out cheaper ?

    Cheers,

    	Jagdeep.
1378.5I'll try phoning the brokersVOGON::MITCHELLEBeware of the green meanieWed Mar 06 1991 09:376

The car itself is already insured - on a limited milage policy, but as
far as I'm aware, there is no cover included for where the car is kept.
I'll phone up the car insurance brokers today, and see what they say.

The garage isn't attatched to the house, but is very close.
