1354.0. "Attention Learner Drivers" by CHEFS::ARNOLD () Thu Jan 31 1991 10:11

    I've just received some information which may be of interest and of
    which I have seen no publicity nor anything in this conference.

    From 1 Oct 1990 new DoT rules for the supervision of Learner Drivers
    require Supervisors to be at least 21 years old and to have held a full
    licence for at least three years.

    The learner can be fined up to 400 + 2 penalty points or
    disqualification for failing to ensure his supervisor is "qualified"
    and the supervisor can also get the same penalty for aiding and
    abetting.

    It is likely that the insurance in this situation will be invalid as
    well.

    I'm adding this to the Fleet Insurance VTX offering.

    Its interesting that there were a few articles on this in the
    newspapers last summer, but no big announcments. I'd have thought that
    for this particular subject, a few adverts would not have gone amiss.

    Wern't there a few other changes in the law last year? I seem to
    recall something about not stopping at pedestrian crossings becoming a
    finable offence.

1354.2Rules, rules, rules...COMICS::WEGGSome hard boiled eggs & some nutsThu Jan 31 1991 11:236
    I received a new Driving Licence last week (that's something else
    that's changed, yet again!! How much bigger can a driving licnce get?)
    With it was a book containing details of all the new rules. I'll bring
    it in if I remember.

1354.3DRiving License ?? That will do nicely.NEWOA::CLIFFEOn the thin ice of a new dayThu Jan 31 1991 12:269

Re .2	re. size.

	I'm sure they don't need to be that big. I leave mine in the
	house, and people who ask for identification seem to expect
	that you always carry it with you. I used to carry it around,
	but it soon crumples up into a tattered lump.
	When it gets to credit card size, then I will carry it around.

    I got a description of this new rule on a bit of paper included in my
    tax disk application letter. It also had some other road safety stuff
    in there (about kids and old people crossing the road and on bikes).
