1341.1 | Sounds like a rip-off | EDSAC::MARSHALL | What she needs, I don't have.... | Mon Jan 14 1991 17:16 | 9 |
| Water pumps cost 20-30, so sounds like they're trying to make a lot of money
from you for nothing.
Depending on which gasket it is, it may require a whole new pump, as they may
not be able to get the gasket on its own from Vauxhall.
Find out which gasket they mean, and why they want to charge you so much...

| Often when garages talk about the waterpump gasket, they mean the
water pump seal. Replacing this involves stripping down the pump,
removing the seal and rebuilding the pump (assuming that this is
possible without destroying the pump). This in terms of labour
is probably more expensive than the cost of replacement.

1341.3 | A little more info | RDGE13::MADGE | | Tue Jan 15 1991 11:05 | 17 |
| Hi,
I have just phoned Vauxhall - the price for the pump - 39 pounds the
price for the Gasket - 1.30 !!!
I have checked and apparently the leak is coming from the flat surface
where the Pump joins the engine bit !! I think I have got it solved
I asked a local mechanic I know who has said to buy the pump and Gasket
and will replace whichever needs replacing - So in total it should only
cost about 65 pounds now . Better I suppose !!
Thanks and regards

| I suppose the pump could be warped, so just replacing the
gasket in this case wouldn't be enough.
You probably won't find out until it is all apart.
I hope it's just the gasket ...

1341.6 | Milk cartons | EDSAC::MARSHALL | What she needs, I don't have.... | Tue Jan 15 1991 11:55 | 8 |
| The waxed card from which milk cartons are made may be better, as it's more
water-proof than corn-flake packets. (Reminds me of the bit in Zen and the Art
of Motorcycle Maintenance where they use bits of Coke can for shims...)
But I'd use proper gasket paper at 60p a sheet, or to save hassle the real
gasket isn't *that* expensive...

| You can still buy cork sheeting with which to make gaskets. Use a
**VERY** sharp knife to cut it or it will tear........

| The main advantage of cornflake packet is that you can get an exact gasket fit
by holding the card against the casting where it is to be fitted, and then tap
the card around the edges of the casting using a spanner.This should give you
the profile of the casting "stamped" into the card, or if you prefer, keep
tapping and the machined casting sharp edges will cut through the card!
