1279.0. "Which car do you recommend?" by UKCSSE::SHARMA () Thu Nov 01 1990 14:34

    Time has come for me to start quote/order process for my Lease car. I
    want to go for something other than a Saphhire LX, my current car;
    something with a better handling and ride. Herein lies my problem.

    I have narrowed down my choice to the following and need to choose
    one of them or something totally different.

    Here is the list,

    	Audi 1.8
    	Passat CL
    	Cavalier SRi
    	Honda 2.0 (Carb) EX

    Audi comes without a radio/cassette and Honda comes with just two
    speakers. What are the financial penalties of getting these extras
    quoted in the lease price? Am I better off buying these later? What
    Warranty/serviceability issues are involved if I do install my own.

    My criteria, in addition to good handling and ride are good value for
    money, safety and a quote on leasing scheme of under 1000 (pound
    sterling).

    What are your opinions? Which one do you recommend?

    All opinions gratefully received.

1279.2Sorry for the typo...UKCSSE::SHARMAThu Nov 01 1990 14:584
    Sorry Richard. I should have said Honda Accord. Rover 400 felt cramped
    and too posh with all the velour and mahogany surrounds.

    I have to agree with Richard on the Rover 400.
    I had one (414 SLi) for two weeks after some B*??@*! try to nick
    my 5GT and I thought it was a great car but maybe a bit gutless in
    1400 version but theres always the GTI with 130 bhp.

    Test drive 'em all - twice if you're still unsure.

    I recently tried the VW Passat CL. Beautifully appointed (for a
    VW), loads of room, but with the acceleration of a steam-roller.
    But then I've been spoilt with my Golf GTi.

    Personally I like the Audi and the above-mentioned Rover.

1279.5Did you try a very new one?DOOZER::JENKINSQuote......unquotEThu Nov 01 1990 18:399

    Re: The Passat CL.

    Not long ago, VW changed the engine supplied with the CL/GL Passat.
    It used to come with a 90bhp 1.8 (now only in the L) but now has
    the same engine as the GT (115bhp Golf GTI engine).

    Makes quite a difference to the performance!

    .0 getting extras quoted in the lease price ?

    The cost of extras on a lease quote is worked out by dividing the total
    cost of the extra over the leasing period (i.e. 30 months). This is
    because extras have little relevance to the re-sale value of the car.
    Personally I resent paying for extras, when at the end of the day they
    have to be returned with the car.

        Am I better off buying these later ?

    In VTX Fleet admin news, under the section "procedure to order a lease
    car" it says "optional extras CANNOT be fitted to vehicles after
    delivery". However, I can't see any reason why not, as long as when
    they are removed from the car it leaves no damage to trim or bodywork.

1279.7which radio/cassette to go forUKCSSE::SHARMATue Nov 06 1990 11:0112
    Well, I have decided to get a quote on the Audi and I am unsure as to
    which radio/cassette unit I should ask for.

    Does someone know of an Audi dealer near DecPark where I can see a
    unit or better still can someone recommend a unit to go for. Criteria
    is a good sounding and adequate unit rather than the fancy bits on top.
    Of course, good value for money; in which case I do not object to fancy
    bits.

    Thanks in advance,
