1207.0. "HELP - Lost Maestro keys" by OVAL::GROOMN (BOY - it's HOT) Mon Sep 03 1990 10:32

    Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

    Last week, the girlfriend's sister's Maestro broke down. I had a look
    at it on friday evening to discover that she'd accidentally put 10 gals
    of diesel in it..... On saturday, I drained the tank bar approx 1 gal,
    unfortunately the connector from the filler pipe is jammed so I was
    going to pump the remainder out of the carb whilst turning the engine
    over.  Now here's the problem ;

    I have lost the ignition key. She doesn't have a spare and does not
    have a record of the number. Can I get a spare ? (If so where from ?)
    or do I have to change the ignition switch & door locks.

Write to Austin Rover (or whatever they call themselves at the moment)

If you know the key number give them that, in not, give them the chassis number
or whatever you call that number that is stamped onto a plate in the engine
compartment.

This works for most makes of cars, it may work with AR !

I'd have thought it would be better to have the fuel circuit flushed and
steam cleaned...diesel is nasty stuff to get rid of.

Assuming:

a) You can still get into the car
b) It uses the same key for ignition and door locks

Remove the door interior trim panel. Look inside the door at the lock; if
you're lucky the lock number will be visible.

Failing that, AR should be able to tell you the lock number from the VIN.

Speak to an AR dealer about the best solution...
(which is probably "don't buy a Maestro in the first place" ;-)

1207.4Nearly there.....OVAL::GROOMNBOY - it's HOTWed Sep 05 1990 10:2819

    An update;

    Called David Ruskins (Reading) on monday morning. Gave them the
    Chassis number which they faxed off to A.R. (Couldn't call them myself,
    security etc.) This morning they called me with the key number, now to
    get it cut......(Hope the previous owners didn't change the locks !!).

    A fiver for three new keys is far better than 48quid for a new lock set
    plus the hassle of fitting it.

    As an aside, the diesel residue in the engine will be burnt of by a
    couple of gallons of the correct motion-lotion, so no need to strip the
    engine down (Could it lubricate the parts other oils don't reach !!)

    So should take 1/2 hr tonight to get the thing going again.
